Reis vs Hammer Middleweight Unification Clash

Kali Reis vs. Christina Hammer in Unification Clash plus female fight news

A battle of middleweight world titleholders takes place when WBO titlist Christina Hammer faces WBC titlist Kali Reis in a rematch that takes place in Germany.

Hammer (19-0, 9 Kos) hopes to repeat with another win but this time Reis (10-5-1, 4 Kos) has a title of her own when they meet in Munich on Saturday Nov. 5. Their first encounter was 18 months ago, but a lot has happened since then.

Reis, 30, has been busier with four fights since that day on May 2, 2015 when she lost to Hammer by unanimous decision. Now she has a world title of her own and a lot more experience with battles against super welterweight world champion Hanna Gabriel and another bruiser against Maricela Cornejo to win the title in New Zealand.

The Rhode Island prizefighter known as “KO Mequinonoag” has a burst of added energy.

“I feel great! It’s a rematch and I had her last time,” said Reis by message on Monday. “It’s the best fighting the best: number one and number two.”

Hammer, 26, fights out of Dortmund, Germany but is originally from Kazakhstan. She only had one fight since meeting Reis. It was a technical knockout victory over Hungary’s Melinda Lazar a 42-year-old out of Budapest.

These are exciting times for the middleweight division with two-time Olympic gold medalist Claressa Shields making her pro debut in a few week’s time. It adds spice and mystery to the 160-pounders. What effect will her abilities have in the professional ranks with no head gear allowed and the use of smaller ounce boxing gloves?

Shields has amassed many amateur fights including battles in Europe, Asia, and South America and has not lost in many years. It would not be a surprise to see the Flint, Michigan boxer matched against one of the current middleweight world champions in less than a year’s time. She has far more experience than most current professional middleweights. She also has a pro style. She doesn’t slap when she punches like most amateur boxers. She hits with full force just like the professionals.

Hammer and Reis both have power and skill and can knock an opponent out. This fight should be much more competitive than their first encounter.

“It’s a great unification fight for women’s boxing,” said Reis who leaves for Germany on Tuesday Nov. 1.
