Female Fight News for week of Jan. 23, 2017

European female boxing got started with a bang this week with several top fights taking place in France and Belgium.

The big one was supposed to take place this weekend with Norway’s Cecilia Braekhus defending her welterweight belts against Swedens Karla Svensson. It was postponed when Braekhus was stricken by the flu bug.

The welterweight championship fight already sold out tickets in Oslo, Norway and will now be moved to February 24. It’s a monster of a fight between the talented Braekhus and somewhat newcomer Svensson who shot past Mikaela Lauren this past summer with a strong showing.

Braekhus was disappointed in being forced to postpone the fight.

“I was in the best shape of my life before I got knocked out by the flu. This is the worst that can happen to a fighter so close to battle, but health and safety comes first of course,” said Brækhus, 35.

This past weekend France had three elite female fight cards with IBF super featherweight titlist Maiva Hamadouche leading the way.

In Asia we’ve seen China begin to stage female fight cards in the past year. This year India is now breaking into the female fight world and has two bouts planned: one in Bhopal and another in Imphal, India.  That country has been strong for years in the amateur world and now those amateurs are getting their pro licenses. In the next five years we could see domination from that continent if the female fighter membership grows in proportion to their populations.

In North America, the country of Mexico had several elite bouts take place including Anabel Ortiz back in action. In the United States of America several female fight cards took place and more are coming this week.

According to sources, Claressa Shields, Ireland’s Katie Taylor and Puerto Rico’s Amanda Serrano could all be fighting soon in February or March.
