Puerto Rico’s Serrano sisters continue to blaze history in 2017 and in Mexico a long-standing champion was dethroned over the weekend. France heated up and next week is Japan’s turn.
Cindy Serrano successfully defended the WBO featherweight world title in a convincing performance over Mexico’s Paola Torres who had promised a knockout.
“She (Torres) had predicted a six round KO which we knew wasn’t going to happen, but the fans enjoyed the talk,” said Serrano the older sister of Amanda Serrano. “We were happy to fight Paola because as a Mexican they come straight at you. We knew that. It’s almost like their universal language.”
The Serranos continue to make history as the only sisters to simultaneously hold world titles. In Puerto Rico they are adored and celebrated as that country’s continued excellence in contributing to its rich boxing tradition.
With both Cindy and Amanda defeating Mexican boxers it stops the run of dominance that champions from Mexico had against Puerto Rico. Their international rivalry continues to be the hottest between countries in any part of the world. Last January, younger sister Amanda defeated Yazmin Rivas.

Another Mexican streak snapped
WBC super flyweight champion Zulina “La Loba” Munoz was making her 11th consecutive defense of the world title she first won in 2012. A five-year span saw the Mexico City fighter amass wins over foes from Japan, Germany, Ireland, Argentina and Uruguay.
But on Saturday, in Cancun, Mexico it was another Mexican fighter Lupita Martinez from her own native Mexico City that dethroned her by unanimous decision. Everything comes to an end.
Meanwhile, in Zapopan, Jalisco, the WBC flyweight tournament continued and saw current WBC flyweight champion Jessica “Kika” Chavez out-box fellow Mexican Ana Arrazola on Saturday. It was the semi-final of the tournament.
Chavez will now meet Esmeralda “La Joya” Moreno once again. Ironically, Chavez won a close 10-round encounter last July 2016. Moreno demanded a rematch and criticized the judges. The tournament started and the end result is Moreno versus Chavez 3. Each has a victory over the other.
Spring heat
France saw multiple fight cards over the weekend including Stephanie Ducastel and Angelique Duchemin picking up wins in title fights. Next weekend Maiva Hamadouche (15-1) defends the IBF super featherweight world title against Argentina’s Anahi Sanchez in Paris.
In New York City, Heather “The Heat” Hardy returns to Brooklyn and finds Hungary’s Edina Kiss ready for a rematch. Hardy defeated Kiss just this past March. Kiss is another of those extremely tough Hungarians who never say no to anyone. They just love to fight.
Tokyo will be ground zero for another all-female fight card featuring minimum weights to super bantamweights on Friday May 19. The main event features minimum weights Kayoko Ebata (10-7) versus Erika Hanawa (7-0).

Argentina
Daniela Rivero (3-0) was the victor over Yisele Sosa (0-5) after four rounds on Saturday May 13. The super flyweight match took place in Rafael Calzada, Buenos Aires.
On Saturday May 20, light flyweights Andrea Sanchez (6-0-1) and Virginia Carcamo (4-3-2) meet in a 10 round bout for the Argentine fight. The match takes place in Villa Angela, Chaco, Argentina.
Australia
On Friday May 19, super bantamweights Sylvia Scharper (6-1-2) and Khwunchit Khunya (2-10-1) meet in a four round bout in Flemington, Victoria.
Canada
Sheena Kaine (5-0) was victorious over Guadalupe Ortiz (0-3) after five rounds by unanimous decision on Saturday May 13. The lightweight fight took place in Edmonton.
Chile
Isis Mascarena (2-0) defeated Ruth Pastermossti (0-1-1) by majority decision after six three-minute rounds on Saturday May 13. The flyweight clash took place in La Granja, Chile.
China
Ayumi Goto (7-0) defeated Sumanthar Baenkham (1-3) by technical knockout in the fourth round on Saturday May 13. The super bantamweight fight was held in Hong Kong, China.
France
Mohamed Larabi (6-11-1) won by unanimous decision over Segolene Lefebvre (16-8-1) after six rounds on Saturday May 13. The super welterweight clash took place in Nord, France.
Ainara Mota (2-3-1) was the victor over Katherine Quintana (0-13-1) after six rounds by decision on Saturday May 13. The featherweight fight was held in Libourne, France.
Stephanie Ducastel (8-3-1) defeated Maria Capriolo (7-6-4) by unanimous decision after 10 rounds on Friday May 12 to win the WBF title. The super featherweight fight took place in Schiltigheim, France.
Angelique Duchemin (14-0) beat Ericka Rousseau (11-2) by unanimous decision after 10 rounds to win the vacant WBF featherweight title on Friday May 12. The match took place in Royan, France.
On Thursday May 18, super featherweights Maiva Hamadouche (15-1) and Anahi Sanchez (15-1) of Argentina meet in a 10 round fight for the IBF world title. The match takes place in Paris, France. Hamadouche, 27, is making her second world title defense.
On Saturday May 20, super featherweights Licia Boudersa (7-1-1) and Bojana Libiszewska (5-20) meet in a six round bout. Also, featherweights Wendy Gervois (2-10) and Wendy Vincent (0-4-1) meet in a six round bout. Both fights take place in Lille, Nord, France.
Germany
Kallia Kourouni (8-1) defeated Grecia Nova (15-26-4) by unanimous decision after 10 rounds to win the WIBF and GBU titles on Saturday May 13. The super featherweight title match took place in Karlsruhe, Germany.
Hungary
Eniko Tiringer (1-0) beat Nora Kiss (0-5) by decision after four rounds on Saturday May 13. The bantamweight fight took place in Budapest, Hungary.
Italy
On Saturday May 20, welterweights Alessia D’Addario (1-0-1) and Silvia Bortot (1-0-1) meet in a four round fight in Pescara, Italy.
Japan
Su Yun Hong (15-1-1) captured the vacant WBO light flyweight world title by split decision over Tamao Ozawa (12-4) on Sunday May 14. The 10-round bout took place in Kyoto, Japan. Hong, 30, is a southpaw who fights out of South Korea.
Miyo Yoshida (7-1) beat Kim Actub (4-8-1) by unanimous decision on Sunday May 14. The eight round bantamweight fight was held in Kagoshima, Japan.
An all-female fight card takes place on Friday May 19 in Tokyo. The main event features minimum weights Kayoko Ebata (10-7) versus Erika Hanawa (7-0); light flyweights Chaoz Minawa (3-0) versus Somsawan Khunmam (2-3); Chisa Naito (1-0) vs. Nanae Suzuki (3-2); Nanako Suzuki (0-0) vs. Konomi Kodama (0-0); Natsuki Tarui (1-5-1) vs. Mont Blanc Miki (0-0); super flyweights Asuka Umemura (0-1) vs. Saori Ozeki (0-0); super bantamweights Chisa Tanaka (1-5) vs. Aira Midorikawa (0-0); and minimum weights Fuka Komura (3-0) vs. Mikiko Muto (2-4).
Mexico
Jessica Chavez (29-4-3) defeated Ana Arrazola (26-12-3) by unanimous decision after 10 rounds to retain the WBC flyweight world title on Saturday May 13. The flyweight fight took place in Zapopan, Jalisco. It was the semi-finals of the WBC flyweight tournament. She will now meet Esmeralda Moreno. Also, Celia Roman (8-6) beat Cintia Cardona (0-4) by decision after four bantamweight rounds. Plus, Cristina Mora (4-0-2) and Arlette Martinez (2-6-1) fought to a draw after four flyweight rounds.
Lupe Martinez (15-9) upset Zulina Munoz (48-2-2) by unanimous decision after 10 rounds to win the WBC super flyweight title on Saturday May 13. The world title fight took place in Cancun, Mexico. The winner Martinez, 25, fights out of Mexico City. Munoz, 29, also fights out of Mexico City and was making her 11th defense of the title.
New Zealand
On Saturday May 20, super featherweights Rebecca Jennings (6-1) and Baby Nansen (5-2) meet in six three-minute rounds. The fight takes place in Porirua, New Zealand.
Panama
On Saturday May 20, flyweights Marta Branas (9-0) and Carlota Santos (7-4-5) meet in an eight round bout. Also, featherweights Chanttall Martinez (19-8) and Marianny Acosta (0-2) meet in an eight round bout. Both fights take place in Panama City.
Poland
Ewa Brodnicka (13-0) defeated Irma Adler (16-8) to win the interim WBO super featherweight title on Saturday May 13. The match took place in Czestochowa, Poland. Brodnicka, 32, fights out of Warsaw, Poland. Adler, 35, fights out of Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Puerto Rico
Cindy Serrano (26-5-3) defeated Paola Torres (10-2-1) to retain the WBO featherweight world title by unanimous decision after 10 rounds on Saturday May 13. The featherweight title fight was held in Aguas Buenas, Puerto Rico and was the main event. Serrano, 35, is the older sister of Amanda Serrano who now holds the WBO bantamweight title. It was Cindy Serrano’s first defense of the title she won last December against Calixta Silgado.
Switzerland
On Sunday May 21, featherweights Vissia Trovato (7-0) and Marisa Portillo (18-13-3) meet for a vacant WBA Inter-continental title. The 10 round fight takes place in Ascona, Switzerland.
United Kingdom
Nicola Adams (2-0) defeated Maryan Salazar (5-2) by technical knockout in the third round of their scheduled six round fight on Saturday May 13. The super flyweight match was held in Leeds, England. It was a three-minute round affair. Adams, 34, is a former Olympic gold medalist. Salazar, 18, fights out of Aguascaliente, Mexico/
On Saturday May 20, super welterweights Hannah Rankin (0-0) and Ester Konecna (1-1-1) meet in a six round fight in Essex, England.
USA
Kali Reis (11-6-1) defeated Ashleigh Curry (7-11-4) by majority decision after six rounds on Thursday May 11. The super welterweight fight took place in Uncasville, Conn. The winner Reis, 30, is a former WBC middleweight champion.
On Thursday May 18, featherweights Heather Hardy (19-0) and Edina Kiss (14-3) meet in a rematch. The fight takes place in Brooklyn, New York. Hardy, 35, fights out of Brooklyn and defeated Kiss by decision this past March. Kiss, 27, fights out of Hungary.
