Super featherweight prospect Mikaela Mayer brought light to the division with her dominating win this past weekend.

After beating Hungary’s Edina Kiss by technical knockout on Saturday, it shed light on a division that overflows with talent all over the world.

Mayer announced publicly on ESPN that first goal on her list is winning a world title in the super featherweight division.

“I really want to take one of those belts at 130,” said Mayer, 28, after her win at Gila River Arena in Glendale, Arizona.

The Southern California native, an ex-Olympian, has many world titlists to choose among. Only one of the titlists resides in the United States of America, two live and fight in Europe and a third in Asia.

None of those champions venture outside of their native countries.

IBF Maiva Hamadouche (18-1, 14 KOs) of France defeated Jennifer Salinas in 2016 to win the title and has defended it three times.

WBC Eva Wahlstrom (22-0-1, 3 KOs) of Finland defeated Natalia Del Valle in April 2015, and has defended the title four times. The last was against Melissa St. Vil who seemed to knock her down but it was not counted by the referee and won a majority decision in April.

WBA Hyun Mi Choi (16-0-1, 4 KOs) of South Korea defeated Chunyan Xi who had one pro fight while Choi was making her pro debut. Since the pro debut win Choi held the featherweight world title until 2013, then moved up a division to win the WBA super featherweight world title in May 2015 against Siriwan Thongmanit (6-7-1) by technical knockout. She has defended the title five times. Choi is 27.

WBO Ewa Brodnicka (15-0, 2 KOs) of Poland defeated Sarah Pucek of Canada to win the vacant title this past April. It was formerly held by Amanda Serrano who also has four other world titles in four other weight divisions. Serrano is currently preparing to vie for a sixth world title in six divisions on Sept. 8, when she meets Argentina’s Yamila Reynoso at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York in the super lightweight division.

Aside from the world champions listed there are a ton of contenders all over the world just itching to get their shot.

Canada’s Sandy Tsagouris has plenty of world class experience and seeks a return to the top of the class. Another is Melissa St. Vil who lost a close match with Wahlstrom several months ago and seeks a rematch with the Finnish fighter.

It’s a pretty deep weight class and Mayer’s involvement only makes it deeper.

Shea

Speaking of former super featherweights, Maureen Shea who once fought for the super featherweight world title back in 2009, took part in the grand re-opening of a boxing gym that was closed when the former owner passed away from cancer.

Located in Simi Valley, Calif. the Quicksilver Hill Sports Academy gym was purchased and opened again on Saturday by comedian George Lopez. The head coach is former world champion Virgil Hill.

Representing the WBC as ambassadors were Shea and Brandon Rios.
