East Coast and West Coast Title Fights Amanda Serrano and Louisa Hawton

Female Fight News Sept. 3, 2018 East and West Coast Title Battles

Amanda “The Real Deal” Serrano chases a sixth world title in as many weight classes this Saturday in New York while Louisa Hawton chases her second in California. East Coast and West Coast female world title challengers are taking charge.

Both title fights will be streamed.

Puerto Rico’s Serrano battles Argentina’s Yamila Reynoso for the vacant WBO super lightweight belt on Saturday Sept. 8, at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. The world title fight will be shown on Showtime’s YouTube channel and on Facebook.

She’s gunning for a record tying sixth division world title. Only Oscar De La Hoya and Manny Pacquiao have ever achieved that many world titles in six divisions.

“Now we’re going after De La Hoya,” said Serrano. “I’ve made weight pretty easy.”

The Brooklyn resident last fought in November when she floored Dominican fighter Marilyn Hernandez three times in less than three minutes. Serrano won a quick one round demolition in a super featherweight bout.

Serrano, 29, moves up a couple of weight divisions to the 140-pound limit against a rugged Argentine fighter in Reynoso, 22, who has eight knockouts in 11 wins. This is a dangerous woman who battled former pound for pound fighter Erica Farias of Argentina and lost by decision.

Why mention Farias?

Farias fought Cecilia Braekhus last year and Belgium’s Delfine Persoon several years ago and lost to both by decision. Braekhus and Persoon are considered top 10 fighters pound for pound. Reynoso lost by decision to the very strong Farias.

Reynoso has never been stopped.

Many fans of female boxing in the U.S. only want fights between American fighters. But there are some very talented and dangerous fighters in other countries. Argentina has more female fights televised on a monthly basis than is shown in the U.S.A. They have many talented boxers.

Serrano has more knockout wins than any other fighter in the U.S. but she is moving up to a much heavier division. Can she carry her power against a sturdy fighter like Reynoso?

“I want to stop her to prove I can own that division too,” said Serrano.

It’s very well worth watching.

Atom weights

In the west coast a battle in the tiny atom weight division takes place as Louisa Hawton meets Mexico’s Brenda Flores for the vacant WBC atom weight world title. The match takes place on Saturday Sept. 8, at Inglewood Forum on the Super Fly 3 card. It will be streamed live on www.360Promotions.us.

Hawton, originally from Australia, was signed earlier this year by 360 Promotions and was given her first loss as a pro by another Mexican fighter in the light flyweight division. Now she is moving down and should fare well in the 102-pound weight limit.

But there are some talented atom weights.

Monserrat “Raya” Alarcon just defeated Mayela Perez by split decision this past Saturday in Saltillo, Mexico. Both Mexican women are top atom weight contenders. Alarcon is a former flyweight world champion who defeated Japan’s Nana Yoshikawa for the WBO title, then recently lost it to Arely Mucino. Subsequently, Alarcon dropped down to her natural weight class and ranks high in that weight class.

Other atom weights are San Diego’s Amaris Quintana who recently won the vacant WBC Inter-Continental title by knockout. She has three consecutive knockout wins. Another who can make the weight is Seniesa Estrada. But the East L.A. boxer has been campaigning at the 108-pound light flyweight class and still dominates.

Super middleweights

Next week will be the battle of 168-pounders Maricela Cornejo and Franchon Crews for the vacant WBC super middleweight world title at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas. ESPN will televise the female clash that takes place on Thursday Sept. 14. Mark that date down.

Cornejo fights out of Indio, Calif. and trains under Antonio Diaz. She’s shown a lot of improvement and has three consecutive knockout wins.

Crews fights out of Maryland and has three consecutive wins. Her only loss was to Claressa Shields when both made their pro debuts in one of the best pro debut fights ever seen. Incidentally, Crews and Cornejo are fighting for the title vacated by Claressa Shields who now is the IBF and WBA middleweight champion.
