Beat Goes On for Female Prizefighting on TV and Streaming

Female Fight News Oct. 22, 2018 HBO and more

By David A. Avila

It’s beginning to be a habit.

Female prizefighting was showcased on a major fight card once again this past weekend and it continues its upward trajectory this week too. The beat goes on.

The Katie Taylor parade rolled into Boston where the champion from Ireland performed against Cindy Serrano in a 10 round performance for a worldwide audience via the fairly new streaming company DAZN.

Streaming may not be the media choice of the old guard that follow men’s boxing, but for female prizefighting its been a boon. A couple of weeks ago DAZN also streamed the world title fight between new champion Jessica McCaskill and Erica Farias.

More streamed female prize fights are coming with Golden Boy Promotions signing a multi-year agreement with DAZN, it will surely include its three female fighters Seniesa Estrada, Marlen Esparza and Maricela Cornejo.

As the old form of coverage seems to be drying up with HBO dropping boxing, a new window has opened in the form of streaming.

Speaking of HBO, this week Heather Hardy meets Shelly Vincent in a rematch on Saturday at Madison Square Garden. The DiBella Entertainment fight card will be shown on HBO live.

Hardy loves being a part of history.

“I wasn’t interested in entertaining a rematch unless it was televised,” said Hardy by telephone. “Anyone who followed my career knows that every single fight I’m for getting fights televised.”

Anyone who saw the first fight on rival network Fox Sports remembers that their first clash was the Fight of the Year in the summer of 2016. Expect more of the same between these two featherweight warriors.
