Two Elite Female Prizefights Including Eva Wahlstrom Heading to Las Vegas

UFC Fight Pass Delves into Female Boxing and More Fight News

By David A. Avila

In less than two weeks WBC super featherweight world titlist Eva Wahlstrom defends against Ronica Jeffrey and in a co-feature Rosalinda Rodriguez clashes with local favorite Jamie Mitchell. Both female fights take place at the Thomas and Mack Center in Las Vegas.

Entrance is free for fans.

Roy Jones Jr. Boxing Promotions is staging the boxing card on Friday August 2, that will be available to watch on UFC Fight Pass which recently streamed the extremely entertaining WBA super welterweight world title fight from Costa Rica between champion Hanna Gabriels and Avril Vidal.

It looks like UFC Fight Pass is putting all its chips into female prizefighting.

And why not?

Female prizefighting in MMA has proven to be a lucrative undergoing with many of its female fights out-doing the male fight cards. It’s only a matter of time before female boxing begins to gain equal traction. The media outlets who delve into streaming or televising girl fights will benefit immensely in our opinion.

The main event between Wahlstrom and Jeffrey will spotlight the European style versus the American style of boxing.

The co-main event between Florida’s Rodriguez and Las Vegan Mitchell pits two relatively newcomers against each other. Both are advised in their corners by world champions. Rodriguez works under Ada Velez and Mitchell works with Layla McCarter. This is going to be an interesting clash of styles.

Aug. 2, mark this down in your calendar.

Fans can register online to receive their free tickets (limit 8 per / person), by going to https://www.unlvtickets.com/eventInfo/spe/739/wahlstrom-vs-latrios/ and following instructions.

Nevada Boxing Hall of Fame

On the topic of Las Vegas, Nevada, recently the Nevada Boxing Hall of Fame finally found a home and opened its doors.

A ceremony took place last Friday at its location in the Boulevard Mall at 3542 S. Maryland Parkway. HeadZup is sponsoring the Nevada Boxing Hall of Fame and shares space where various interactive exhibits can be enjoyed by children and adults. The museum is filled with rich posters and photos of former boxing events that took place over the century in the Silver state.

Famed journalist Rich Marotta conceived of the idea for a Nevada Boxing Hall of Fame, a state which has been home to epic prize fights for more than 100 years including Jack Johnson versus James Jeffries for the heavyweight title in Reno, Nevada in 1910.

“Boxing has been around for a very long time in Nevada,” said Marotta. “We hope people visit our museum when they are in Las Vegas for fights. Bring the kids.”

Among those in attendance last week were number one female pound for pound fighter Layla McCarter along with former champions Mark “Too Sharp” Johnson, Hasim Rahman, and trainer Thell Torrance.

“Nevada has a rich history of boxing,” said Marotta. “We’re very pleased that HeadZup has given us space for our museum. It’s a wonderful place to see boxing history.”
