Women’s Fight Chatter – A Look At This Week’s Fights

Mon. Feb. 29

Jessica Belder (4-0) faces Marianna Gulyas (13-22) in a super bantamweight clash set for six rounds on Monday Feb. 29. The female bout takes place at Rotterdam, Netherlands. Belder, 34, resides in Amsterdam and Gulyas, 28, fights out of Hungary.

Tues. March 1

Veteran female fighter Tenkai Tsunami (21-11, 10 KOs) faces Emika Himuro (5-1-1) in a bantamweight bout set for eight rounds in Tokyo, Japan. Tsunami, 31, is a former super flyweight and bantamweight world champion but has experienced problems since losing the title in 2012. Numerous world title challenges have resulted in losses to Janeth Perez, Mariana Juarez, Zulina Munoz, Jessica Chavez, Arely Mucino in Mexico and to Carolina Rodriguez in Chile. Himura, 35, has not lost in five years.

 

Sat. March 5

WBC female flyweight titlist Jessica Chavez (25-4-3) defends against Argentina’s Vanesa Taborda (8-4-3) at Centro Civico de Ecatepec in Mexico City. Chavez, 27, is making her second defense of the title she won in September against Arely Mucino. Chavez formerly held the IBF light flyweight world title. Taborda, 31, fights out of Cordoba, Argentina and had two successive draws against Paola Benavidez in Argentina and Mariana Juarez in Mexico. She’s fell short twice on world title attempts; a loss to Daniela Bermudez and a draw to Leonela Yudica. Both of those fights were in Argentina.

 

Sun. March 6

Chika Mizutani (14-5) and Kimika Miyoshi (11-8-1) battle for the OPBF super featherweight title in a fight set for eight rounds in Kawasaki, Japan. Mizutani, 34, formerly trained in Hollywood, Calif. under Freddie Roach. She has fought and lost twice in world title attempts against Hyun-Mi Choi and Erica Farias. Miyoshi, 32, lives and trains in Kawasaki. Mizutani lives and trains in Tokyo.
