By Prizefighter.com staff

WBC female lightweight titlist Delfine Persoon (36-1) of Belgium retained the title by unanimous decision against Dominican Republic’s Christina Linardatou (8-1) on Saturday. The 10-round bout took place in Roeselare, Belgium.

Persoon, 31, has long dominated the lightweight division but has never fought outside of Europe. The rather tall prizefighter cruised all 10 rounds against Linardatou who fights out of Greece, but is originally from Dominican Republic.

Linardatou was knocked down by Persoon early in the fight but managed to survive until the end against the always attacking Persoon. So far only two women have been able to compete with the Belgian and that was Argentina’s Erica Farias who traveled to Belgium and lost the WBC lightweight title by decision. It was a close battle. The other was France’s Maiva Hamadouche who was undefeated and won four rounds on the judge’s score cards.

Other than those two opponents, Persoon has not come close to losing a fight since November 2010.

More than a few consider her among the top fighters pound for pound but one female could topple her reign in the U.S. Layla McCarter has been chasing her for years but so far no luck. Could they end up fighting in the U.S. for a mega sbowdown?
