Hanna Gabriel Heads World Title Fights and other female chatter

Three female world title fights take place in Venezuela led by WBO super welterweight champion Hannah Gabriel (15-1-1, 10 KOs) who defends her title against Katia Alvarino (8-2-1, 3 KOs) on Saturday June 18.

All three female world title fights take place in La Guaira, Venezuela with Costa Rica’s Gabriel facing Uruguay’s Katia Alvarino. Also, Venezuela’s Mayerlin “La Monita” Rivas (13-3-1, 9 Kos) defends the WBA bantamweight title against Spain’s Melania Sorroche (11-0-1, 2 Kos) and super flyweights Linda Lecca (12-2-1, 3 Kos) of Peru defends the WBA title against native Carolina Alvarez (12-6-3, 9 Kos).

Gabriel, 33, has been fighting since 2007 and has captured world titles as a welterweight and super welterweight. The former track star for Costa Rica last fought in October when she defeated Kali Reis to retain the belt.

Alvarino, 30, is a tall super welterweight making her first trip north of Uruguay. She currently has a two-fight winning streak.

Rivas, 28, is making a third defense of the world title she captured a year ago against Sayda Mosquera by knockout. She is originally from Maracaibo, Venezuela.

Riva’s opponent Sorroche, 25, hails from Manresa, Spain and has never fought outside of Spain. It’s also her first attempt at a world title.

WBA super flyweight queen Lecca is 27 years old and defending the title for the first time. It’s a rematch with Alvarez who she met in the ring in March 2015 but ended in a no contest due to a clash of heads that caused a severe cut in the second round. Alvarez is 38 years old and hails from Caracas, Venezuela.

 

Argentina

In Buenos Aires, a super lightweight contest saw Rocio Perez (1-1) gain her first win as a pro by unanimous decision over Brenda Caparelli (0-2) who is winless in two attempts. The four-round match took place on Sunday.

In Villa Ballester, a super middleweight fight saw Florencia Carballo (2-0) stop Melany Vespa (0-2) by knockout in the second round on Saturday. Carballo is 21 and lives in Buenos Aires. Vespa is also 21 and lives in San Martin, Argentina.

In San Justo, a battle between super lightweights saw Natalia Reynoso (5-0, 5 Kos) knock out Julia Sacchi (2-1) at 1:08 of the second round on Saturday. Sacchi had also received a standing eight count earlier in the round. The win was Reynoso’s fifth consecutive win by knockout. She is 28 years old and lives in Campana, Argentina. Sacchi, 23, suffered her first loss as a pro and was fighting in her hometown.

In Viedma, a featherweight bout on Saturday saw Anahi Salles (5-14-2) snap a two-fight losing streak with a win by unanimous decision against Yessika Munoz (1-12-2) after six rounds. Salles is 26 years old and Munoz is 34.

In Puerto Madryn, a battle for the Argentine featherweight title saw Lizbeth Crespo (10-3) emerge the winner by technical decision after five rounds over Vanessa del Valle Calderon (5-11). The fight on Friday June 10, was stopped due to a clash of heads that caused a severe cut over the eye of Calderon. The score cards had Crespo ahead.

In San Isidro, a featherweight clash saw Micaela Lagos (3-0) win by knockout of Macarena Castillo (2-2) in the first round on Friday June 10. Lagos, 18, has three knockouts in three fights and lives in Don Torcuato, Argentina. Castillo, 21, was fighting in her hometown.

 

Australia

In Bendigo, a bantamweight clash saw Cherneka Johnson (2-0) win by unanimous decision over Atitaya Saisin (0-1) after four rounds on Saturday. A flyweight bout saw Marina Ramirez (1-0) win her pro debut by decision over Saranyaphong Theinthong (0-6).

Julie Gaston (7-1-1, 4 KOs) faces Lori Farr (1-3-1) in an eight round featherweight contest on Saturday June 18 in Newstead, Australia. Gaston, 36, fights out of Brisbane, Australia and is known as “Mighty Mouse.” Farr, 39, also fights out of Brisbane, Australia and will be challenging Gaston for the Australia featherweight title.

 

Chile

Alys Sanchez (13-3-1) meets Jessica Arreguin (10-1) for the interim IBF bantamweight title on Friday June 17 in Santiago. Chile. Sanchez is 29 years old and fights out of Maracay, Venezuela. Arreguin, 25, fights out of Agua Prieta, Mexico and has not lost a fight since losing her pro debut in 2013.

 

Colombia

In Sahagun, a bantamweight clash for the WBA super bantamweight world title saw Liliana Palmera (27-11-3) win by split decision over Mexico’s Jessica Gonzalez (6-2-1) after 10 rounds on Saturday. Palmera, 34, had numerous world title attempts in numerous weight divisions including super lightweight. This was her first world title and all three judges scored it very close after 10 rounds. Gonzalez, 28, fights out of Mexico City. Palmera fights out of Monteria, Colombia. On a companion bout, Olga Julio (22-16-1) defeated Glenis Cardona (2-8-2) by unanimous decision after six rounds of a flyweight bout.

 

Japan

In Tokyo, Naoko Fujioka (15-1) defeated Shindo Go (16-3) to retain the WBO bantamweight title by unanimous decision after 10 rounds on Monday June 13. It was a battle between world champions as 40-year-old Fujioka made the first defense of the title she won last October. Go, 28, a former flyweight world champion, was attempting to wrest the title and become Japan’s best female fighter. The scores were 98-91 twice and 97-92 for Fujioka. A companion bout saw a battle for the WBO atom weight title end in a split draw between Nao Ikeyama (17-3-2) and Saemi Hanagata (12-6-2) after 10 rounds. It was Ikeyama’s fourth defense of the title since May 2014. The title remains in her hands with a draw.

In Tokyo, a featherweight bout for the vacant OPBF title saw Kimika Miyoshi (13-8-1) emerge the winner by unanimous decision after eight rounds with Kai Johnson (5-10-3) on Tuesday June 7. Miyoshi is 32 and lives in Kawasaki, Japan. Johnson is 34 and lives in Tokyo. This was the third time that Miyoshi defeated Johnson. In a companion bout between light flyweights, Chisa Naito (1-0) won her pro debut by majority decision over Atsuko Nitta (0-1) after four rounds.

 

Luxembourg

In Differdange, super lightweights Caroline Andre (1-2) and Klaudia Szymczak (2-8) meet in a six round bout on Friday June 17. Andre, 34, lives and fights out of Differdange’ Luxembourg. Poland’s Szymczak is 27 and fights out of Dabrowa.

 

Mexico

In Mexico City, a flyweight contest saw Jackie Calvo (8-2) defeat Edith DeJesus (3-2) by decision after six rounds on Saturday. Calvo, 20, has won eight consecutive bouts after starting her pro career with two losses. She lives in Mexico City. DeJesus, 23, lives in Calvillo, Mexico. In a companion bout, a light flyweight bout saw Brenda Fernandez (3-0) remain undefeated by unanimous decision over Adelaida Hernandez (0-1) after four rounds.

In Merida, a bantamweight clash between the Guadalupe’s saw Guadalupe Solis (4-0) win by technical knockout of Guadalupe Duran (0-1) at 48 seconds of the first round on Saturday. Solis lives in Cintilapa, Mexico. Duran fights out of Yucatan.

In Mexico City, a super flyweight clash saw Estrella Valverde (14-5-2) knock out debuting Maria Hernandez (0-1) in the fourth round of their contest on Friday June 10. Valverde, 31, fights out of Mexico City and was defending her Mexico super flyweight title. A companion bout saw bantamweight Jacqueline Mucio (1-0-1) gain her first win as a pro in defeating Valeria Perez (6-2) by majority decision after six three-minute rounds.

WBA minimum weight titlist Anabel Ortiz (20-3) defends her title against San Diego’s Jolene Blackshear (9-7) on Saturday June 18 in Tijuana, Mexico. Ortiz, 29, lives in Tepic, Mexico and has defended the world title six times since capturing the belt on July 2013. Blackshear, 46, is a former IFBA light flyweight champion.

 

New Zealand

Nailini Helu (1-0) faces Sarah Long (0-0) in a heavyweight contest set for four rounds on Saturday June 18.

 

Philippines

In Mandaluyong, Erika Hanawa (5-0) won the vacant WBC Atomweight-Asia title by unanimous decision over Christine Latube (1-10-2) after six rounds on Friday June 10. Hanawa, 25, lives in Tokyo, Japan. The challenger Latube, 24, lives in Baguio City, Philippines.

 

Singapore

In Singapore, a super featherweight clash for the vacant UBO Inter-continental title saw Nurshahidah Roslie (3-0) knock out Wondergirl Sithsaithong (0-2) at 1:43 of the second round on Friday June 10. Roslie fights out of Singapore. Sithsaithong is 17 and lives in Bangkok, Thailand.

 

Switzerland

In Ascona, a featherweight clash for the vacant EBU title saw Vissia Trovato (5-0) win by technical knockout over Renata Domsodi (14-10) at 1:20 of the fifth round on Saturday June 11. Trovato, 33, fights out of Vimercate, Italy. Domsodi is 41 and fights out of Budapest, Hungary.

 

 

United Kingdom

In Swindon, England a battle for the vacant WBC silver middleweight title saw Kelly Morgan (4-0) emerge the winner after eight rounds over Lisa Cielas (2-1-1) on Friday June 10. Morgan, 35, was fighting in front of her hometown. Cielas, 23, lives in in Germany.

 

USA

In Detroit, a super lightweight match up saw Carlyn Biskup (1-0) win her pro debut by unanimous decision after four rounds with Stephanie Spehar (0-2) On Friday.

Jessica McCaskill (1-0) faces debuting Katonya Fisher (0-0) in a four round super lightweight bout on Saturday June 18 at Chicago, Illinois. McCaskill, 31, fights out of Chicago. Fisher lives in Bakersfield, California.
