Fight Chatter Week of March 7 – Upcoming female bouts
Argentina’s Edith Matthysse (14-7-1) defends the female WBA and WBC featherweight titles against Canada’s Jelena Mrdjenovich (35-10-1) on Friday March 11 in Edmonton, Canada this time. Their first encounter took place in Buenos Aires where Matthysse won by decision. The rematch will be tougher for the Argentine sister of Lucas Matthysse.
Undefeated IBF female super flyweight titlist Debora Dionicius (21-0) of Villaguay, Argentina meets Luna Torroba (9-3-2) La Adela, Argentina in a bout set for 10 rounds on Saturday March 12. The bantamweight fight takes place in Buenos Aires. Torroba is trying to end a two-fight losing streak. Dionicius has successfully defended the IBF title seven times.
Mexico’s Zulina Munoz (45-1-2) defends the WBC female super flyweight title against Ireland’s Christina McMahon (7-1) at Ciudad Juarez, Mexico on Saturday March 12. This is McMahon’s first fight since losing to bantamweight champion Alicia Ashley in a battle of 40-year-olds. McMahon, 41, will try to end Munoz’s seven-fight world title win streak. Munoz has not lost a fight since 2007 when she was beaten by decision in Germany by Alesia Graf. McMahon is the only one to defeat current WBC bantamweight titleholder Catherine Phiri.
Poula Estrada (4-0) faces Paola Ortiz (1-5-1) of Houston, Texas in a four round flyweight bout on Saturday March 12 in Lancaster, California. Estrada, 23, is a former amateur champion who has now been fighting as a pro for two years. Ortiz won her last fight by decision in Brooklyn, New York.
Female fight results
WBC female flyweight titlist Jessica “Kika” Chavez (26-4-3) retained the title by decision over Argentina’s Vanesa Taborda (8-5-3) after 10 rounds on Saturday March 5. The world title fight took place in Mexico City. Two judges scored it 97-92 and one 97-93 for Chavez. It was Chavez second title defense since defeating Arely Mucino for the title last September.
Tenkai Tsunami (22-11) stopped Emika Himuro (5-2-1) at the end of the second round of their female bantamweight fight in Tokyo, Japan last Tuesday. It was part of an all-female fight card that included nine female bouts. In the co-main event Saemi Hanagata (12-6-2) won by technical knockout over Mika Oda (6-8-1) at 1:30 of the fifth round in a mini flyweight bout.
Jessica Belder (5-0) remained undefeated with a second round knockout of Marianna Gulyas (13-23) in a super bantamweight contest held Monday Feb. 29. The match took place in the Netherlands.
Kimika Miyoshi (12-8-1) defeated Chika Mizutani (14-6) by unanimous decision after eight rounds of a super featherweight bout to win the vacant OPBF title. The female match took place on Sunday March 6, in Kawasaki, Japan. It was Miyoshi’s third consecutive win and Mizutani’s third consecutive loss. Mizutani was formerly trained by Freddie Roach several years ago and sponsored by Manny Pacquiao.
