Marcela Acuna and International Fight News

Marcela Acuna and International Fight News – One of the best female fighters of this era returns to battle with Argentina’s Marcela Acuna who began her career fighting back-to-back legends in her first two pro fights. Several other female fights take place this week in Europe and the United States.

Acuna was a newbie to pro boxing when she made her pro debut against the great Christy “Coal Miner’s Daughter” Martin back in December 1997. The fight took place in Pompano Beach Florida when Martin was still a force in women’s boxing. Acuna lost of course but after 10 rounds with the veteran Martin at super lightweight.

The next fight Acuna accepted took place nine months later against yet another legend Lucia Rijker. That’s like jumping from the lion’s den to the tiger’s den. Pick your poison. Acuna picked both. Against Rijker she was stopped in the fifth round of their clash for the vacant IBO super lightweight world title. But looking back, that was quite an accomplishment.

Perhaps realizing she was too heavy she dropped down four weight divisions to super bantamweight. It is at the 122-pound limit that she found a comfortable weight for her talent. Since finding the proper weight class Acuna has been a force.

Today, Argentina has become one of the most prolific female boxing capitals and has been able to stage female fights on a prolific basis. But Acuna was more than willing to travel to other countries. She’s captured world titles in the super bantamweight and featherweight division including wins over Yazmin Rivas, Jackie Nava, and Alejandra Oliveras. The only opposition who has given her trouble is Alicia Ashley who has two wins and one loss in three encounters.

Now, Acuna (43-6-1, 18 Kos) faces fellow Argentine Brenda Carabajal (11-2, 8 Kos) a 25-year-old from Jujuy, Argentina. Both will be fighting for the interim WBA featherweight title on Saturday in Caseros, Argentine which is home base for Acuna.

It should be a good match up. Look for the write up following the fight.

In Europe, a showdown between Swedish welterweights take place when Mikaela Lauren (27-3, 12 Kos) the current WBC super welterweight titlist drops down in weight to face rival Klara Svensson (16-1, 5 Kos) on Saturday in Stockholm. The interim WBC welterweight title will be the prize.

Lauren, 40, apparently does not like Svensson who is 28. They’ve never fought each other before. It should be a good rumble.

In Los Angeles vicinity, a light flyweight bout takes place on Saturday when undefeated Seniesa Estrada (7-0) of East L.A. fights former minimum weight champion Nancy Franco (15-9-2, 4 Kos) of Guadalajara, Mexico.

Estrada, 24, will be making her third appearance at the Inglewood Forum in two years. But this is the first time she fights someone with a winning record in Franco who has lost three consecutive matches but two of those were world title fights.

It’s the moment of truth for Estrada.

Franco, 27, was stopped only once and that was too Mexico’s super tough Ibeth “La Roca” Zamora back in 2011. She’s accustomed to tough competition.

Can Estrada compete at this level? We’ll see on Saturday.
