Mikaela Mayer Impresses in Second Pro Fight

The 5’9” lightweight Mikaela Mayer (2-0, 2KO) looked impressive as she scored her second pro win and second knockout of her career over the game Allison “Boom Boom” Martinez (1-3, 1KO) on the undercard of the WBO featherweight title fight between champion Oscar Valdez against contender Genesis Serivania on Friday.

The main event was televised live by ESPN in front of a good crowd in the Tucson Arena in Tucson, Arizona presented by Top Rank.

Martinez made her debut on Halloween of 2015 with a TKO win but now has lost her last three, but her fight against Mayer was the only time she has been stopped.

The lone female pro fighter under the Top Rank banner, the amateur standout Mayer made her pro debut earlier this year with a 75-second destruction of Widnelly Figueroa back in August in her hometown of Los Angeles, CA.

This time Martinez made her work for her win.

Fighting in two-minute rounds, Martinez of Spring, TX, went after Mayer as soon as the bell rang trying to land a jab and get on the inside.  Mayer dealt well with the pressure letting her own jab go as she back pedaled away from the hard charging Texan.

By mid-round Mayer established a home for her left hook and after landing it clean in the second half of the two-minute stanza, Martinez went down to one knee.  Martinez beat the count as Mayer, smelling blood, went after her looking to end the night once and for all.

Martinez finished the round but not before tasting a hard right hand flush to the face.

It looked as Mayer would end matters in the second as Martinez did away with the full-bore charge and instead was content in looking for a way in.  Mayer wasn’t going to allow it as she stayed in the middle of the ring with her long-armed jab as her main weapon.

The 27-year-old  Mayer was successful in catching Martinez coming in scoring with uppercuts, hooks and right hands as it quickly became target practice for her while Martinez was doing just enough to stay alive.  A right hand wobbled Martinez but she was able to stay on her feet while Mayer relied more on her right cross.

With only seconds to go in the second round, Mayer scored a flush right hand that hurt Martinez, as the Texan tried to hold Mayer escaped and landed a solid three-punch combination but Martinez survived. The referee took a long look and said a few words to the shaken fighter at the end of the round.

With seemingly the end near, the game Martinez came out for the third only to be met with a hard right hand in the opening seconds of the round.  Martinez went down against the ropes, visibly hurt, but still the tough Texan beat the count.  Despite getting up, her corner had seen enough and called off the fight at 39 seconds of the third.

Mayer has two knockouts in two pro fights and is the only female Olympian that can claim that.
