Ava Knight to Sign With Mayweather Promotions
By David A. Avila
Mayweather Promotions has agreed to sign Ava Knight to a promotional contract it was announced on Monday. However details of the length of the contract were not released.
Knight (14-2-4, 5 Kos), a former flyweight world titlist originally from Chico, California, now resides and trains in Las Vegas.
The signing of Knight will add a third female prizefighter to Mayweather Promotions roster. Last year the Las Vegas-based company signed Latondria Jones and perhaps female boxing’s most skilled fighter Layla McCarter.
As a flyweight Knight she won her first world title by an impressive knockout over Mexico’s Arely Mucino who held the IBF flyweight title. It was the “Knockout of the Year” in 2011. She was subsequently signed by a Mexican boxing promotion company.
She also defeated Mariana Juarez for the WBC version and several other Mexican flyweights. In 2013 she dropped down another weight division but lost a bid against the light flyweight world titlist Ibeth “La Roca” Zamora in 2013.
Despite her talent she found it difficult to find another interested promotion company but was able to obtain fights here and there.
Now 29 years old, Knight has always shown an ability to fight in heavier weight classes as her two battles with Kaliesha West in the bantamweight division exemplified in 2008 and 2011.
Knight will be participating on the Feb. 17 fight card featuring Danny “Swift” Garcia versus Brandon “Bam, Bam” Rios in the main event at the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino in Las Vegas.
