Female Fight News March 5, 2018 Layla McCarter
By David A. Avila
Layla “The Amazing” McCarter held her number one spot in the welterweight rankings by spanking dangerous Victoria Cisneros and winning by stoppage.
It was McCarter’s (41-13-5, 11 KOs) fourth knockout win in seven fights. The win on Saturday in Ignacio, Colorado also gained McCarter the GBU and WIBF welterweight titles and maintained her spot as arguably the best fighter pound for pound in the world.
Now she awaits a showdown with the other fighter proclaimed by many as the best pound for pound female fighter Cecilia Braekhus.
On Saturday, New Mexico’s Cisneros entered the ring as a noted tough girl who had previously fought Braekhus eight years ago and lost by unanimous decision after 10 rounds. She had also fought McCarter before and lost a decision in 2006. But this was the new McCarter with punching power.
“Of course I wanted the knockout. I think she went the distance with Braekhus so maybe just to prove something,” said McCarter, 38, who fights out of Las Vegas. “I wanted to start with boxing and give the people a good show.”
Long have skeptics relegated McCarter to journeywoman status because of the 13 losses on her record. But for those that paid attention, they noticed the Las Vegas prizefighter has not lost a fight since 2007 despite fighting overseas against top-rated competition.
Cisneros had upset more than a few fighters along the way with her pressure-fighting style that can smother the opposition with punches. But she was facing one of the most skilled female fighters in the planet in McCarter: think Floyd Mayweather or James Toney.
McCarter was able to move when she wanted to move, or fight inside by slipping and countering with thunderous punches. For those knowledgeable of what they were seeing, it was a boxing clinic.
“She (Cisneros) has a warrior’s mentality but gets hit way too much,” McCarter said. “Focus was the key with a good jab. She’s a tough girl and not likely to quit one her own.”
Now fight fans wait to see if Braekhus and McCarter can meet this summer to decide who truly is the best female fighter pound for pound? And to determine who is the true welterweight world champion.
A fight between McCarter and Braekhus deserves to be put in a major venue either in New York City, Las Vegas or Los Angeles. It also would be worthy of being televised in both the U.S.A. or in Europe. McCarter versus Braekhus would be two of the best female fighters today meeting in the boxing ring and flaunting their incredible fighting prowess. It’s a dream fight.
Napoleon
In Brooklyn, the vacant WBA super middleweight world title was captured by Alicia Napoleon by unanimous decision over Belgium’s Femke Hermans at Barclays Center on Saturday. It was Herman’s first loss as a professional.
Napoleon, 32, a former amateur star in New York, was making her second title attempt and found success this time. Previously she lost a decision to Tori Nelson this past December. She recently signed with Lou DiBella and with this title win is in position to possibly face Claressa Shields who has the WBC and IBF world titles in the super middleweight division.
Television
As we stated last week women’s boxing will be included in several upcoming fights beginning this weekend when first Maricela Cornejo fights Lisa Garland at the OC Hangar on Friday in Costa Mesa, California. It’s a Golden Boy Promotions fight card that will be televised by ESPN. The very next day Mikaela Mayer meets Maria Semertzoglou in a six round bout at the StubHub Center in Carson, California. The Top Rank card will also be televised by ESPN. All of Mayer’s fights have been shown at least on the ESPN app. Next week, Seniesa Estrada fights Sonia Osorio in the main event at the Belasco Theater in downtown Los Angeles. Estrella TV will televise the fight on the Spanish language network. Women’s boxing is on the move.
Japan
An all-female fight card takes place on Thursday March 8, when the historic Korakuen Hall in Tokyo hosts the card led by a world title fight between Kayoko Ebata and Ji Hyun Park for the WBO title in Tokyo. Another world title clash pits light flyweights Chaoz Minowa against veteran Tenkai Tsunami for the WBO title. Other fights include Miyo Yoshida, Kai Johnson, Saemi Hanagata, Erika Hanawa, Yuki Koseki and others. Japan has been at full force since the Japanese Boxing Commission included women’s boxing in the country.
More Claressa
If you were watching the Academy Awards on Sunday you might have recognized WBC and IBF super middleweight titlist Claressa Shields in a television commercial. The Detroit prizefighter appeared in the advertising for Walmart as a superhero along with singer/actor Mary J. Blige. It was quite a coup for female boxing to have one of its best bring attention to the sport and her exploits as a record-setting two-time Olympic gold medalist and world champion in the span of less than two years. Shields is awaiting a showdown with WBC and WBO middleweight titlist Christina Hammer hopefully before the summer ends.
