Amanda Serrano Blows Door Open and Other News and Notes
By David A. Avila
Amanda Serrano tossed down the gauntlet to the boxing world proclaiming that female prizefighters are not second class and can demand equal terms as male fighters.
Serrano’s willingness to fight 12 three-minute rounds against Danila Ramos last weekend, despite sanctioning bodies such as the WBC prohibiting both three-minute rounds and 12 round title fights for women, proved her willingness to fight for women’s right to choose.
“I hope this is just the beginning. I know I have other women following me,” said Serrano after the fight.
Now, who will be the next champion to follow Serrano?
A month ago, more than two dozen current and former champions agreed with Serrano to continue her quest for equality including Chantelle Cameron, Mikaela Mayer and Seniesa Estrada.
Recently, Maricela Cornejo and Kallia “Pink Tyson” Kourouni messaged Serrano via social media and said they will be fighting three-minute rounds on their next fights. The tidal wave is forming.
Before Serrano’s performance at 12 three-minute rounds, the previous female champion to perform under similar terms was Layla McCarter in Las Vegas. She did it twice in 2007. Both fights ended in knockouts.
Many fighters are unaware that no rules exist mandating two-minute rounds. Boxing commissions cannot prevent women from fighting three-minute rounds. For decades this has been the choice of promoters to keep two-minute rounds for women.
Even today promoters opt to have the women fight two-minute rounds. Why? Because they want them over and done to make room for the men.
Of course, they will not say this on record.
I’ve dealt with promoters on numerous occasions and two have told me this face to face that they want women fights over with quickly. But it was off the record so I cannot say who they are.
All female fighters have the right to choose whether they fight two or three-minute rounds. Serrano showed it can be done. All you have to do is demand, not ask.

Yokasta in Costa Rica
Minimumweight champion Yokasta Valle returns home to Costa Rica to fight Mexico’s Anabel Ortiz this weekend.

Looking to stay busy Valle opted to fight in less than two months. She recently defeated Maria Santizo in the Los Angeles area in defense of her titles on Sept. 16. Unable to face Seniesa Estrada because of an injury to the East L.A. fighter, the Costa Rican fighter opted to fight Mexico’s Ortiz.
