Clara Lescurat Retains WBA Title in Australia and Other News

Clara Lescurat Wins in Australia, Marlen vs La Chucky and More News

By David A. Avila

Argentina’s Clara Lescurat retained the WBA super flyweight world title by unanimous decision over Australia’s Linn Sandstrom on Wednesday in Sydney.

It’s not easy to win in another country.

Despite traveling across the globe Lescurat (11-0, 4 Kos) defeated the slightly taller Sandstrom (8-3-2) at the Hordern Pavilion to retain the WBA title for the fifth time. This was her second time defending the crown outside of her native Argentina.

Lescurat, 35, started late in pro boxing and has rocketed up the standings with her athleticism and strength. The super flyweight division has many talented fighters including Japan’s Mizuki Hiruta the WBO titlist, Mexico’s Asley Gonzalez the WBC titlist and Mexico’s Irma Garcia who has the IBF title.

Any unification fight between world titlists always adds credibility for the winner.

The Argentine champion began boxing professionally in 2021.

Marlen vs La Chucky 2

Once again WBA and WBC flyweight titlist Marlen Esparza faces Argentina’s Gabriela “La Chucky” Alaniz who holds the WBO title. The unification match takes place on Saturday April 27, at the Save Mart Center in Fresno, California. DAZN will stream the Golden Boy Promotions card live.

The first time they met Esparza (14-1, 1 KO) was given a majority decision victory over Alaniz (14-1,6 Kos) 10 months ago in San Antonio, Texas. For the second time Texas judges seemed to send in their tallies ahead of time with ridiculous scores.

Alaniz team disputed the decision rendered by one judge who nearly gave Esparza every round despite the world viewing a different fight. A rematch was made and here we are in California.

It was the second time an Esparza title fight result was disputed by TV analysts and fans watching.

Esparza always displays grit in her fights, but the lack of power makes it difficult to decipher a winner every round. On the other hand, Alaniz has power but could not display it against the clever fighting American from Texas.

It should be a very close fight, again.

Choi vs Camara in South Korea

The mysterious Hyun Mi Choi (21-0-1) meets Canada’s Jessica Camara (12-4) for the vacant WBA lightweight world title at Suwon, South Korea on Saturday April 27.

Choi, 33, is a former WBA super featherweight titlist who bowed out of several unification challenges during her reign as the champion. Now with Katie Taylor the current undisputed super lightweight champion, the vacant WBA lightweight title is available and Choi wants it.

Camara, 36, has an aggressive style, as does Choi, and that could prove exciting for the fans able to watch the match in Korea.
