Adelaida Ruiz and Ginny Fuchs Battle for Super Fly Title

Adelaida “La Cobra” Ruiz and Ginny Fuchs Battle in Los Angeles Area and More News

By David A. Avila

Despite holding an interim title Adelaida “La Cobra” Ruiz is probably the best or second-best super flyweight in the world and meets talented American Olympian Ginny Fuchs this weekend in the Los Angeles area.

It’s a fire versus water matchup.

Ruiz (16-0-1, 8 Kos) defends the interim WBC super flyweight title against Fuchs (3-0) on Saturday Aug. 31, at Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson. DAZN will stream the Matchroom Boxing card.

The Los Angeles-based Ruiz has been one of L.A.’s best secrets.

Now 35, Ruiz spent her late teens and 20s raising children. She had been a top amateur, but motherhood came calling. It was in 2017 that she finally had time to revisit her love of boxing.

Fast hands and power are her calling card.

Because she was not signed by a major promoter, Ruiz was forced to take the slow road. The best she could hope to win was an interim title offered by the WBC. She won the interim title by unanimous decision over Sonia Osorio on September 2022 in Costa Rica.

The actual WBC world titlist is Asley Gonzalez a brawling pressure fighter from Mexico.

For years the WBC and other sanctioning bodies have established an interim world title which in other words means they are number one below the actual champion.

The interim title has been used to keep fighters from complaining about not fighting the actual champion. Usually, the fighter holding the interim title is better than the champion.

Will the WBC, which likes to play promoter and matchmaker, allow the winner of Ruiz and Fuchs to fight the actual champion?

Interim titleholders have been frozen out before.

It won’t be easy for boxer-puncher Ruiz on Saturday against the speedy Fuchs.

“I don’t know what to expect,” said Ruiz.

Fuchs, 36, had an extensive amateur career. The southpaw from Houston, Texas has speed and movement. She knows how to hit and move and though she lacks the power of Ruiz, her agility can give the L.A. fighter some problems.

“I think she is a pretty technical fighter, but she doesn’t use her feet really,” said Fuchs of Ruiz. “Can’t fight backwards.”

Most people know Fuchs as a close friend of another Olympian Mikaela Mayer, who is training for her upcoming clash with Sandy Ryan for the IBF welterweight title next month.

Ruiz and Fuchs are both in their mid-30s and itching for the actual title. Exposure is key and their fight will be streamed by DAZN. This is probably the toughest test for either pugilist as pros.

“I will have to adjust to the fight in the ring,” said Ruiz. “Either she comes in as a brawler to fight, or she stays out boxing from the outside, either one I feel ready for it.”

The super flyweight division is loaded with talent. Its one of the best divisions in women’s boxing with Japan’s Miyuki Hiruta, Argentina’s Clara Lescurat, Mexico’s Irma Garcia, and Great Britain’s Emma Dolan.

On Saturday two of the best will be testing each other.

Bang Bang Lulu Returns

Hawton, a former WBO light flyweight world titlist, returns to fight again in 2024 after a nearly five-year absence from the boxing ring. This past April she won by first round knockout in Thailand.
