In a heated and quick-paced super flyweight battle Ginny Fuchs defeated Adelaida “La Cobra” Ruiz by split decision to win the interim WBC title.

It was a firefight.

Though American Olympian Fuchs (4-0) was more familiar with amateur boxing, she opened up the fight with a full-frontal attack that Ruiz (16-1, 7 KOs)  gladly accepted at Dignity Health Sports Center in Carson, Calif. Furious blows were exchanged throughout the two-minute round.

In the second round Fuchs changed up and used more angles and jabs to create distance. It allowed Ruiz to develop a better rhythm and though it wasn’t as furious as the opening round, neither fighter cheated themselves in holding back.

Ruiz found her rhythm for the left hook and scored repeatedly for the remainder of the fight. She often switched to southpaw against the southpaw Fuchs, but wasn’t able to gain advantage from the tactic.

Back and forth the two American fighters exchanged blows and tactics with Fuchs slightly  more accurate with her straighter punches. Ruiz landed with the left hooks but not enough to offset the straighter blows connected by the Olympian.

It was an evenly matched fight that showed Fuchs could absorb the blows from the heavy-hitting Ruiz who has seven knockout victories. It also showed that Ruiz could handle speed despite being unable to find high level opponents for the past four years.

Both showed their grit and skills.

After 10 high level competitive rounds one judge scored it 97-93 for Ruiz, but two others saw it 100-90 and 97-93 for Fuchs, who becomes the new interim WBC super flyweight titlist.

“I thought I got the cleaner shots,” said Fuchs who showed a badly damaged right thumb after the fight. “She was definitely the toughest foe I ever fought.”
