Another Fight of the Year Candidate – Ginny Fuchs and Adelaida Ruiz in L.A.

Rarely are the flyweights and lower weights shown on television or streaming, but when shown they delivered big.

Ginny Fuchs’ (4-0) won a close savagely fought victory over Adelaida Ruiz (16-1-1) in a 10-round battle for the interim WBC super flyweight title in what could be the Fight of the Year last weekend. Matchroom Boxing put it together the match at Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson, Calif.

That location always seems to deliver great fights.

What won the fight for Fuchs was her straight punching, but more her ability to take a punch because she ate a handful of left hooks from La Cobra. Over and over she caught left hooks that previously rendered seven Ruiz foes unconscious.

Not this time.

And for every time Ruiz burrowed forward with her pressure assaults, Fuchs maneuvered cleverly with subtle angles to deliver head-snapping blows. The only thing better would have been three-minute rounds of their action.

The two American super flyweights battled back and forth in a frenzy. During the one-minute intermissions neither fighter looked content. Both were hungry and eager to show their mettle. They formed a human tornado with their whirl of nonstop blows and relentlessness.

After 10 rounds it was no surprise that it was a split decision. The fight was that close. On my score card I tabbed it a draw. But I was not in attendance. And being in ringside is more advantageous for scoring. You can hear the blows. And in the pro game that means a lot.

During the interview Fuchs revealed a bone protruding from her right thumb. She suffered it early in the fight. But she ignored the pain and victory was her reward.

Now, hopefully, Fuchs is afforded an opportunity to fight against the actual WBC super flyweight titlist Asley Gonzalez of Mexico.

“A contract with Matchroom is in the works right now,” said Fuchs. “I plan to have a faster recovery than expected and will be looking to fight the WBC champion Ashley Gonzalez.”

So far, the Fuchs and Ruiz clash is a strong candidate for Fight of the Year. Another candidate is the minimumweight battle between Seniesa Estrada and Yokasta Valle last March in Arizona. That battle for the undisputed championship started slow and ended in torrid fashion between the two speedsters.

Estrada was in the arena to watch Fuchs and Ruiz.

Those flyweights. They’re little but fiery.
