Katie Taylor, Amanda Serrano, Claressa Shields and More Fight News
By David A. Avila
Seven-division champion Amada Serrano and Ireland’s mighty Katie Taylor meet again in one month in the state of Texas.
Can their rematch equal their first epic encounter?
Serrano and Taylor are set to meet again at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas on Nov. 15. They will be fighting for the undisputed super lightweight world championship. Netflix will be streaming the Most Valuable Promotions event.
They’re bringing along Iron Mike Tyson.
In case you have been in a coma for the past year, Tyson will be fighting Jake Paul who promotes Serrano. Its all part of an extravaganza that includes a world title match between Mario Barrios and Abel Ramos.
When Serrano and Taylor met two years ago, they sold out Madison Square Garden in New York City. Taylor fans from Ireland and the United Kingdom flooded Manhattan and Serrano supporters arrived early for an epic weigh-in ceremony.
The event was supposed to take place a few months ago but an injury to Tyson forced a postponement. Taylor and Serrano are still on track to meet again and this time in front of an expected larger crowd. AT&T Stadium seats 80,000.
Claressa
A film based on Claressa Shields called “The Fire Inside” is set to be released this coming Christmas by MGM. The movie features Ryan Destiny as Shields and Brian Tyree Henry as her coach Jason Crutchfield.
If you know anything about two-time Olympic gold medalist Shields its that the title is appropriate for movie.
Shields just recently knocked out Canada’s Vanessa Lepage-Joanisse in a two-round destruction to win the WBC heavyweight world title this past July. She now has won the super welter, middleweight, super middleweight, light heavyweight and heavyweight world titles.
Ever since the Flint, Michigan fighter entered the pro boxing world, she’s fought 123 rounds and seldom lost a frame according to the judges. That’s an incredible feat.
Miyo
IBF bantamweight titlist Miyo Yoshida faces Shurreta Metcalf on Wednesday Oct. 23, at the Theater in Madison Square Garden in New York City, it was announced by Yoshida on her social media platform.
It’s a rematch of their fight that took place on November 7, 2023 that saw Metcalf use her long arms to keep Yoshida from mounting an inside attack in their 10-round fight. After that match, Yoshida was picked by then IBF champion Ebanie Bridges to replace an injured opponent and was beaten by the Japanese fighter for the title a month later.
Yoshida (17-4) now holds the title but has not fought since that title win and will once again clash with the Texas native Metcalf (13-4-1).
360 Promotions
Undefeated prospect Lupe Medina (7-0) meets veteran Katherine Lindenmuth (6-3) in a minimumweight fight set for six rounds on Saturday Oct. 26, at the Commerce Casino in Commerce, Calif. It should be fire.
Medina faces her toughest test against Lindenmuth who has already battled stiff competition and held her own.
360 Promotions led by Tom Loeffler has always provided a stage for female prizefighting. Over the years he promoted fights that included Laila Ali versus Valerie Mahfoud at Staples Center in L.A.in June 2003. That fight card also featured Lucia Rijker versus Jane Couch. Incidentally, Ali’s opponent Mahfoud defeated Anne Wolfe by knockout in November 2000. It was also the last fight for heavyweight champion Lennox Lewis who retired after a brutal win over Vitali Klitschko.
Time flies. I was at that fight card.
