Tsunami Tenkai in Argentina and Other Big Showdowns
By David A. Avila
Tsunami Tenkai leads a trio of critical showdowns with world title implications.
All three are very juicy match ups.
First, Natasha Jonas and Lauryn Price tangle in London, England for several welterweight titles, while lightweight WBC titlist Caroline DuBois fights Bo Mi Re Shin on Friday March 7. The next day Tenkai meets Evelin Bermudez for the WBO and IBF light fly titles in Argentina.
London is the center for two showdowns between top tier world champions.
Jonas (16-2-1) and Price (8-0) meet 10 rounds for the IBF, IBO, and WBC, WBA titles at Kensington, England.
Jonas, 40, the current WBC and IBF titlist, recently defeated Ivana Habazin and before that edged past Mikaela Mayer in a win that could have gone the other way very easily. She will be facing Price, an Olympic gold medalist and current WBA and IBO titlist.
Price, 30, hails from Wales and has an aggressive pressure style that saw her win a battle between punchers with a third round knockout of Colombia’s Bexcy Mateus this past December in Liverpool. Before that she defeated the always tough Jessica McCaskill.
In the co-main event, lightweights Caroline Dubois (10-0-1) and Bo Mi Re Shin (18-2-3) meet 10 for the WBC world title.
Me Re Shin, 30, fights out of South Korea and has knockout power. She was one of only two fighters to stop Venezuela’s Ana Maria Lozano who has 38 pro fights. That says something. She lost a split decision to Delfine Persoon in Belgium. That really says something.
Dubois had two competitive fights, first, against Jessica Camara that ended in a technical draw due to a clash of heads. Before that she defeated Maira Moneo. Dubois has very good talent and is still young at 24. Is she ready for Mi Re Shin?
Argentina Awaits
Tenkai has never been shy to travel for competition regardless of the location. The Japanese road warrior has fought the best competition possible for the past two decades including Yessica Chavez, Mariana Juarez, Arely Mucino, and Naoko Fujioka.
When Tenkai meets Bermudez on Saturday March 8, in San Lorenzo, Argentina, they will be fighting for one of the titles she formerly held before losing a furious battle with Seniesa Estrada in Los Angeles back in 2023.
It’s been a long road for Tenkai who hails from Tokyo but was originally born in Okinawa.
Bermudez holds the WBO and IBF titles and has proven to be as good a fighter as her sister Daniela Bermudez. This is her third defense of the two titles since winning them against Mexico’s Tania Enriquez in two years ago.
Tenkai has speed but Bermudez has height and is fighting in Argentina. It should be very competitive.
Yokasta vs Marlen
Golden Boy Promotions announced on social media this past Monday that WBC minimumweight titlist Yokasta Valle (32-3, 10 Kos) will meet former champion Marlen Esparza (15-2, 1 KO) for the world title at Cancun, Mexico on March 29. No other details.
Merari Vivar at Salesian
East L.A.’s Mirari Vivar (8-0) fights Sarah Click (2-8-1) in a bantamweight fight set for four rounds at Salesian High School in East Los Angeles, Calif.on Saturday March 8. For ticket information contact www.eliteboxingusa.com.
Undefeated Vivar is one of the fan favorite boxers in East L.A. and spars against top competition in the greater Los Angeles area. The last time I saw her work was against Seniesa Estrada a year ago in preparation for her battle with Yokasta Valle.
Vivar is a very strong fighter with a pro style.
