Mizuki “Mimi” Hiruta Receives Ring Magazine Title Belt and More News
By David A. Avila
The rise of women’s boxing continues and was evident last weekend with Most Valuable Promotions presenting a bevy of high-quality matches including the WBC light fly world title defense of Lourdes “Little Lulu” Juarez against former champion Yesica Nery Plata.
Two women from Mexico City battling it out in Texas. Somehow that seems ironic in these politically charged days.
Not only did the light flyweight world title battle take place, but the middleweight championship fight between champion Desley Robinson of Australia and Logan Holler of the USA also occurred. Robinson scored a resounding second round knockout.
Most Valuable Promotions led by Jake Paul, Nakisa Bidarian and Amanda Serrano have become the organization of choice for female prizefighters. They also handle male prizefighters, but it’s the women that are knocking on the doors of MVP.
Recently, Costa Rica’s Yokasta Valle recently signed with MVP and is slated to perform on the upcoming MVP card that features Paul versus Gervonta “Tank” Davis on November 14, at Kaseya Center in Miami, Florida. Netflix will stream the fight card.
Valle (33-3, 10 Kos) will be defending the WBC minimumweight title against talented Yadira Bustillos (11-1, 2 Kos) of Las Vegas.
Other female fights on the same card include Alycia Baumgardner (16-1) facing Leila Beaudoin (13-1) for the super feather championship, and Cherneka Johnson (18-2) defending the bantamweight titles against Amanda Galle (12-0-1).
MVP has a growing large roster of female champions and highly ranked fighters on its roster headed by the seven-division queen Serrano.
It seems like not too long ago Matchroom Boxing and Golden Boy Promotions were the promoters of choice for aspiring women fighters. Now it’s MVP.
Another rising promotion company that flies under the radar is 360 Promotions that is led by Tom Loeffler. For decades he has presented high quality female boxing. One of his charges is recently retired Cecilia Braekhus of Norway. She recently fought and defeated Ema Kozin and officially announced her retirement after a great career.
Loeffler has several other female fighters at the top of the ladder.
This past Sunday, one of Loeffler’s fighters Mizuki “Mimi” Hiruta was presented with the Ring Magazine belt for her dominance as the WBO super fly world champion. The jubilant pink haired fighter from Japan has quickly become a fan favorite in Southern California and trains in Los Angeles with Manny Robles.
Loeffler also promotes Lupe “Baby Face Assassin” Medina an undefeated minimumweight contender who is raising eyebrows with her blend of technique and power.
Another in the Loeffler fold is “Right Hook” Roxy Verduzco an amateur standout who is quickly making the adjustment to the pro game. She recently performed and was victorious in a super bantamweight clash.
All three of Loeffler’s female fighters have the power to visually attract fans and physically end their opponents. All attractive and all skilled technicians.
Hiruta (9-0, 2 Kos) is poised to defend the WBO super fly title on November 22, against Mexico’s Gloria Gallardo (16-3-3) at the Thunder Studios in Long Beach, Calif. UFC Fight Pass will stream the 360 Promotions card.
This is Hiruta’s fifth title defense this year.
“I’m very happy to be fighting five times this year,” said Hiruta while in Riverside, Calif. “No pasa nada.”
While training in Los Angeles with Robles and his team, the Japanese fighter with pink hair has picked up speaking in Spanish and English too. She is gaining fans quickly in Southern California.
Women’s boxing has entered another plateau.
Mayer vs Spencer Oct. 30
WBO super welter titlist Mikaela Mayer travels to Canada to meet WBA titlist Mary Spencer in defense of the title, said Top Rank.
Mayer (21-2, 5 Kos) meets Spencer (10-2, 6 Kos) on Thursday Oct. 30, at Montreal Casino in Montreal. The unification match will be shown on Top Rank Classics FAST channel.
This will be Mayer’s first time fighting in Canada, She has fought overseas in the United Kingdom four times and was two for four. It’s always a gamble fighting in another country. Hometown judges can be very biased.
