Mary Spencer vs Mikaela Mayer

Champions Mikaela Mayer and Mary Spencer Collide in Montreal

While many champions seek home field advantage others like Mikaela Mayer just want to fight. Wherever and whenever.

Put her in England. No Problem. Put her in Canada. No problem.

Mayer (21-2, 5 Kos) travels to Montreal to face Mary Spencer (10-2, 6 Kos) on Thursday Oct. 30, for the WBA, WBC, and WBO super welterweight titles. The match can be seen live on Top Rank Classics FAST channel.

“It’s going to be the toughest fight,” said Mayer on social media. “I have a big job to do on Thursday night. It’s always been my goal in this sport to go and search out the best fights possible, the biggest names possible.”

If you know anything about Mayer, a native of Los Angeles, her fierceness will surface in any location whether it’s home or in enemy territory. Like a cornered leopard the claws will come out.

Throughout her career that fierceness has pierced through opposition whether its gyms in the Spanish-speaking areas of L.A. or the quarter finals of the Olympics in Rio de Janiero. Mayer turns on the switch with the snap of her fingers.

Twice she suffered losses by decisions in other countries but in each loss the other fighter did not escape unscathed.

Outside of the gyms or boxing rings, Mayer has that look of a fashion model. When she enters a big or small room, people instantly notice as if a spotlight glowed on her.

Only a few female fighters have that charisma.

Canada’s Spencer is the opposite.

A former Olympian like Mayer, she has fought the likes of Claressa Shields, Franchon Crews-Dezurn and Natasha Jonas. As a pro she used her power to knock out more than half her foes including first round obliterations of Sonya Dreiling, Cynthia Lozano, Chris Namus and Beatriz Aguilar.

Those first rounds against Spencer are important.

Only Belgium’s Femke Hermans has solved the Spencer conundrum. Twice she accomplished the feat. The last win occurring on October 2023 in Montreal.

When Mayer, 35, and Spencer, 41, meet in the center of the boxing ring you can expect plenty of action. Spencer will be bent on winning by knockout and Mayer will be looking to overwhelm the Canadian fighter with volume punching.

“She’s a worthy opponent. She’s done a lot in the sport. You know, I remember her name from back in the day,” said Mayer about WBA champion Spencer. “She was the it girl back in the amateurs, so those are the type of names I want to add to my resume, and we got the fight done, so I’m happy to be here.”

Both are very tall and both world champions. The winner goes home with the belts and probably a showdown against United Kingdom’s Lauren Price who holds a welterweight title.

This matchup might be the Fight of the Year.
