Adelaida Ruiz vs Alexas Kubicki and More News
By David A. Avila
For many years people in the Los Angeles area whispered about a female fighter Adelaida Ruiz who was very good but seemingly disappeared.
Then in 2017, Ruiz appeared at a boxing card in Montebello. After four consecutive wins word spread quickly that “La Cobra” was back.
It was a riveting second round knockout win at Commerce Casino against MMA fighter Brenda Enriquez that really launched her to another level. The knockout was captured on video and still depicts the savagery Ruiz can render at any moment.
Can Ruiz (17-1-1, 8 Kos) unleash the dogs when meeting Canada’s Alexas Kubicki (13-2, 2 Kos) for the vacant WBC super fly world title on Saturday Nov. 29, at Save Mart Arena in Fresno, Calif. Probox.TV will stream the fight.
Canada’s Kubicki recently had a taste of world championship caliber opposition last September when she faced undisputed flyweight champ Gabriela Fundora and was stopped in the seventh round. Now she is moving up one weight division.
Can Kubicki handle “La Cobra” Ruiz?
The moment has finally arrived for Ruiz to fight for the world title. Though she tallied win after win and remained in the top five in the world, world title opportunities never seemed to arrive.
“They said it was too high of a risk. Seriously,” said Ruiz recounting the conversations from champions and their representatives. “That was the reason they didn’t want to take the fights.”
For the last four years Ruiz who is also known as “La Cobra” has won interim world titles several times without being offered a shot at the actual title.
Last year, in the Los Angeles area, Ruiz met former amateur standout Ginny Fuchs in yet another super flyweight title eliminator. She lost by split decision after a furious 10 rounds at Dignity Health Sport Park. The judges scores were all over the place in a very ferocious match.
“Honestly, I felt it was too close of a fight. It could have been a draw. I didn’t like my performance that day,” said Ruiz. “I think I was too comfortable in that fight. I needed to let that dog out of me. I need to let it go.”
Ruiz lost by split decision with one judge giving every round to Fuchs in a very competitive fight.
That was her last match and taught her a valuable lesson to not hold back.
The mother of three grown children works out daily at her homemade gym. Her father serves as her trainer. She also holds down two jobs one at a doctors office and another at Amazon.
Ruiz spent years taking care of her three children and only when they were old enough did she consider returning to the boxing ring. She had been a successful amateur fighter before quitting to care for her babies. Now, they are grown at 19, 17 and 15.
It’s taken eight years to finally get a crack at the world title through the help of Roberto Diaz the former matchmaker for Golden Boy Promotions for decades, It’s with his assistance that this moment has finally arrived.
On Saturday Ruiz finally competes for the actual world title.
“Expect a war and I’m a get the dog out of me. No holding back on anything,” promises Ruiz.
More Super Fly Stuff
Last weekend WBO super fly titlist Mizuki “Mimi” Hiruta displayed her ever advancing fighting skills against Mexico’s Gloria Gallardo. Once again the Japanese fighter had no problem dictating the fight with her speed, agility and power.
Speaking of Hiruta, she has twice sparred with Adelaida Ruiz about two years ago when the pink haired fighter first arrived in Los Angeles.
Ruiz does not remember much of their encounters. Should Ruiz win on Saturday could we see a unification match between the two Los Angeles-based female fighters?
Another interesting tidbit is IBF super fly champ Irma Garcia won the title against Italy’s Stephanie Silva at Thunder Studios in Long Beach two years ago. She is a southpaw boxer like Hiruta and also works as a police officer in Mexico. Another side note is WBA super fly champ Jasmine Artiga won the title this past March in San Bernardino. She recently signed with Most Valuable Promotions.
An interstellar war could be erupting soon between these belt holders.
