Alycia Baumgardner Leads Star Studded MVP Netflix Card on Friday

Alycia “The Bomb” Baumgardner vs Leila Beaudoin in 12 Three-Minute Round Fight on Friday

By David A. Avila

Fight fans get a chance to see Alycia “the Bomb” Baumgardner reset the boundaries for women when she defends the WBA, WBO and IBF super feather titles against Leila Beaudoin in a match set for 12 three-minute rounds on Friday.

Three-minute rounds, not two-minutes.

“It’s the perfect scenario,” said Baumgardner on social media. “I want a knockout.”

Baumgardner (16-1, 7 Kos) a noted knockout puncher joins Canada’s Beaudoin (13-1, 2 Kos) in their standout fight at Kaseya Center in Miami, Florida on Friday Dec. 19. Netflix will stream the Most Valuable Promotions event at no extra cost.

Three other female world title fights will also be included to support the Jake Paul versus Anthony Joshua heavyweight clash.

For decades women prizefighters have been lobbying to fight 12 three-minute round fights like the men. But one of the main obstructions has been the WBC sanctioning organizations which prohibits three-minute fights for women.

The WBC, led by Mauricia Sulaiman, has maintained that a certain UCLA doctor did a study that showed that extra minute was dangerous for women. However, women boxers have died in two-minute round limits. Boxing is dangerous for not just women but men.

Many women fighters, including Baumgardner, want equality across the board and are willing to abandon the WBC belts to prove it.

But it takes two to commit to three-minute rounds and Beaudoin is willing to accept the new parameters in their world title fight.

“I love to take a challenge as an athlete, as a warrior, I need that,” said Baumgardner at a press conference in November before that fight card was scrapped and moved to this new date on Friday Dec. 19. “You all know I like to fight, to punch somebody, and the fact I get an extra minute to punish Leila, I love that.”

Baumgardner signed with MVP which led to other females signing with the group led by Paul and Nakisa Bidarian. The first woman was Amanda Serrano the eight-division world titlist from Puerto Rico. She is also a leading proponent for women fighting 12 three-minute round bouts.

A showdown between Baumgardner and Serrano could happen in the near future.

On Friday, Beaudoin, a practicing nurse, will be challenging Baumgardner for three of the super feather titles. The Canadian defeated France’s Elhem Mekhaled by knockout in the fifth. Baumgardner defeated the same Mekhaled by decision almost three years ago.

Baumgardner who erupted on the international scene with a sensational stoppage win over Terri Harper four years ago in England, has taken all challengers. She will be joined by four other female world champions on this MVP fight card.

Other championship fights

Costa Rica’s Yokasta Valle (33-3, 10 Kos) defends the WBC minimumweight title against Yadira Bustillos (11-1, 2 Kos) of Las Vegas, Nevada. Valle has reeled off three successive victories since losing a showdown to the now retired Seniesa Estrada in March 2024. Valle has speed and a willingness to outwork the opposition.

Bustillos, 25, has shown technique and power and was able to knock out Maria Santizo who went the distance with Valle when they fought two months earlier in September 2023.

Valle has become a superstar in her country and her sister Naomy Valle is also signed with MVP.

Bantamweight champion Cherneka “Sugar Neekz” Johnson (18-2, 8 Kos) defends the the WBA, WBC, WBO, IBF titles against Amanda Galle (12-0-1, 1 KO) of Canada. Johnson hails from New Zealand but fights out of Australia. She is a former super bantam world titlist.

Johnson is a strong and rugged fighter who does not hesitate to rough up opponents by any means. Galle, 36, fights out of Ontario, Canada.

England’s Caroline Dubois (11-0-1, 5 Kos) defends the WBC lightweight title against Italy’s Camilla Panatta (8-2-1, 1 KO) in a match set for 10 rounds. Dubois, a former Olympian, recently signed with MVP and is considered one of the top young rising stars in boxing.

Panatta, 34, was born in Italy and has fought most of her pro fights in Mexico. That could be a good thing or bad thing. As a southpaw, she will be fighting another southpaw which means whoever has the better right hook should win.
