Lightweights Elif Nur Turhan  vs Alycia Baumgardner and Other World Title Fights on Sunday

By David A. Avila

MVP is coming with a “Sunday punch” as Alycia Baumgardner and Elif Nur Turhan unload punches for the lightweight title.

And they are not alone.

A fully-loaded boxing card features five world title fights including Baumgardner (18-1, 7 KOs) versus Nur Turhan (14-0, 8 KOs) for the IBF lightweight title on Sunday Nov. 8 at College Pak Center in Arlington, Texas. ESPN will televise the MVP card.

The main course will be boxer-puncher Baumgardner, who has lately made Texas her home base, against Turkey’s Nur Turhan, a big swinging, head-lopping kind of fighter with a no mercy approach.

It was a year ago that Nur Turhan wrecked Brazil’s Beatrice Ferreira to unconsciousness with her Shohei Ohtani swings and connects. After five rounds and an emphatic knockout win, the Turkish girl suddenly became a major player in women’s boxing.

Baumgardner can also hit with power, but her last knockout came five years ago when she stopped England’s Terri Harper with a bomb. That knockout win gave her the WBC super featherweight title and established her as a well-rounded boxer with power.

“Da Bomb” is moving up a weight division and on paper, anything can happen when these two high caliber fighters meet.

Nur Turhan, 31, has been the busier fighter with three fights in a year’s span. She recently fought and defeated Gabriela Tellez, Taylah Gentzen, and Ferreira. All were highly regarded fighters.

Baumgardner, 32, fought and defeated Bo Mi Re Shin a brawler type fighter similar to Nur Turhan in April. Before that, she beat Leila Beadoin handily by decision last December. Both of those fights were at super featherweight. Now she is stepping up a weight division to fight Nur Turhan.

Will there be an explosion of styles?

Super flies

Super flyweight champions Irma Garcia (26-5-1, 6 KOs) of Mexico and Nataly Delgado (21-7-2, 5 KOs) of Panama are willing to determine who is superior.

Garcia, 45, suddenly has found her power after years of being mostly a southpaw boxer. In her last two fights she has emerged victorious with knockout wins. In her last contest she destroyed Emma Dolan in three rounds in England. The Mexican police officer has merged her boxing abilities and has the ability to set traps.

Facing Garcia will be Delgado, who derailed hard-punching Jasmine Artiga and took the WBA title away by unanimous decision last June. She is a nonstop puncher and knows how to fight in close quarters. This is her second fight in the USA. She is a tiny but mighty super fly defending the WBA title and hoping to add the IBF title.

Super bantams

Two world title belts are vacant and Ramla Ali (11-2, 3 KOs) and Mikiah Kreps (11-0) will battle to see who grabs the IBF and WBO super bantamweight world titles.

Ali, 37, formerly held a super bantam world title and is gunning for two more belts when she faces Kreps, a fighter from Niagara Falls, New York. Ali has the height advantage, but Kreps is eager at 30 years old to make her move. Both fighters have extensive amateur backgrounds.

The winner between Ali and Kreps will probably face the winner between WBC super bantam titlist Skye Nicolson and Miyo Yoshida

Nicolson (16-1, 3 KOs) moved down in weight after losing the featherweight title and Yoshida (19-5, 1 KO) moved up a division after losing the bantamweight world title. Both fighters have experience as world champions but have distinctive styles.

Yoshida, 38, is an aggressive pressure fighter always eager to fight an inside type of battle. She will not see that with Nicolson, who is constantly moving and has one of the best jabs in women’s boxing.

Nicolson, 31, is a southpaw which adds another dimension to her mode. She can pop but always prefers to hit and run. Two-minute rounds suit her style perfectly. The winner will probably face the winner of Kreps and Ali for a unification match.

Hawaii’s Shera Mae Patricio (10-0, 3 KOs) is fighting Brittany Sims (7-3) for the vacant WBA bantamweight world title. Patricio had an impressive amateur background and has blazed through subpar competition so far. Sims has fought decent competition and has not lost a match in almost four years.

It will be interesting to see the outcome.

Others planned to participate are flyweights Natalie Dove, Nayeli Rodriguez, Jocelyn Camarillo, Nazarena Serra, Kirsti Bavington and knockout artist Albina Moldazhanova.
