Miyo Yoshida In Stiff Test in NY and More News

Miyo Yoshida vs Shurretta Metcalf in NYC, & Title Fight in California

By David A. Avila

Bantamweight contenders Miyo Yoshida and Shurretta Metcalf battle in Manhattan on Tuesday for an opportunity to decide who will fight the world champion possibly next year.

Women’s boxing has truly become an international sport.

Japan’s Yoshida (16-3) clashes with Texas fighter Metcalf (12-4-1) for an IBF regional title on Tuesday Nov. 7, at the Edison Ballroom in New York City. The DiBella Entertainment card will be streamed on DAZN.

“The winner might have the possibility of fighting Ebanie Bridges,” said Lou DiBella, promoter.

The current IBF titlist is Australia’s Ebanie Bridges who is set to meet another Aussie Avril Mathie on Dec. 9 in San Francisco, Calif. The winner between Yoshida and Metcalf will be ranked high by the IBF.

Yoshida, a two-time super flyweight world champion, is moving up in weight for this fight and will have a very challenging contest against the taller Metcalf.

Recently, Metcalf handed Melissa Odessa Parker her first loss as a pro. The Dallas fighter has a distinct height and reach advantage.

The former champion Yoshida, a single mother, packed up her bags and moved from Japan to New York with her daughter to continue her career. It was a brave move and not surprising for her.

Yoshida said challenges have always been part of her life. Because women were not accepted easily in the fight business in Japan, she first moved to Hawaii to learn. And when her country opened up boxing to women, then she returned home and delved into prizefighting and became a world champion boxer.

Now, Yoshida along with her daughter are living in Brooklyn to continue her career. She wants her daughter to obtain an education in the USA. Meanwhile, the former champion has aspirations of fighting for another title.

It’s not the only female fight on the boxing card organized to honor Veteran’s Day. Undefeated Mikiah Kreps (6-0) meets Isis Vargas (9-5) in a super bantamweight match.

One of the featured bouts on the boxing event called “Heroes on the Hudson” includes former super featherweight world titlist Jamel “Semper Fi” Herring (23-4, 11 Kos) facing undefeated Nick Molina (13-0) in an eight-round bout. For more information call (212) 947-2577.

Southern California heat

In another fight card tinged with international flavor takes place on the West Coast as Mexico City’s Irma Garcia (22-5-1) meets Italy’s Stephanie Silva (8-0) on Saturday Nov. 11, for the vacant IBF super flyweight world title at Thunder Studios in Long Beach, California. DAZN will stream the MarvNation Promotion card.

“This is my first time fighting in the United States,” said Garcia, 42, who is a law enforcement officer in Mexico. “I’m excited to be fighting here for the first time.”

Garcia has fought for the world title three times and hopes this will be the lucky shot.

Silva is an undefeated fighter from Rome, Italy who was training in Las Vegas when she received the call from MarvNation.

“It was an easy fight to make,” said promoter Marv Rodriguez. “It’s a really good fight.”

Also featured on the card is Yadira Bustillos (8-1) who is a fast-rising minimumweight contender from Las Vegas. She will be facing Guatemala’s Maria Santizo (11-4) who recently fought Yokasta Valle in September in a very competitive fight.

Doors open at 2:30 p.m. For more information email events@marvnation.net
