“La Chucky” Alaniz Beats Marlen Esparza and Other News

By David A. Avila

Three flyweight titles switched hands as Gabriela “La Chucky” Alaniz pulled out a victory against Marlen Esparza in their rematch.

It was another razor close split decision victory, this time by the Argentine fighter and this time in California, not Texas.

After winning several fights in her native state of Texas, this time the change in locale favored Alaniz who forced a rematch by filing a complaint on the Texas judges, one in particular who scored nine of 10 rounds for Esparza when they first met in the ring July 2023.

Alaniz picks up the WBA and WBC flyweight titles and regains the WBO title. The only other title is held by IBF titlist Gabriela Fundora.

An American trio of judges scored this rematch with one judge Steve Morrow favoring Esparza 98-92 and the two Californian judges favoring Alaniz. It was a battle that saw busy pressing style of Alaniz against the slick defensive and counter-punching work of Esparza.

Because of Esparza’s lack of power, Alaniz was able to walk through the shots coming and fire four and five-punch combinations of her own. Though few of those blows landed cleanly, the Alaniz was the busier more active player in the championship clash.

It was Esparza’s first loss since suffering defeat against undisputed minimumweight champion Seniesa Estrada.

Will there be a third match between Alaniz and Esparza, or a battle for undisputed flyweight championship with Fundora?

“There are no plans as of now,” said Eric Gomez, vice president of Golden Boy Promotions who represent both Esparza and Fundora.

Jessica Camara Wins

Canada’s Jessica Camara ventured to South Korea to face Hyun Mi Choi for the WBA gold lightweight title and won.

Camara (13-4) defeated Hyun Mi Choi (21-1-1) by split decision after 10 rounds on Saturday April 27. The WBA lightweight world title fight was held in Suwon.

It was the Montreal fighter’s second attempt at a world title. Her first attempt took place three years ago and she lost her championship bid against Kali Reis who held the IBO, WBA, WBO super lightweight titles. Since that time Reis has shifted into the movie industry where she has emerged as a real force in that industry too.

Camara’s style seemed well suited for Choi who has a similar approach. Both implement pressure style fighting and seldom retreat. Dropping back down to 135 pounds suits the Canadian fighter who also has a win over Heather Hardy.

She is managed by Brian Cohen.

Clara Lescurat Big Win in Australia

WBA super flyweight titlist Clara Lescurat traveled to Australia last week and defeated solid fighter Linn Sandstrom.

Lescurat (11-0) defeated Linn Sandstrom (8-3-2) by unanimous decision after 10 rounds on Wednesday April 24. The WBA super flyweight world title match was held in Sydney.

“It was a fight in which I was very defensive, but pressing at all times,” said Lescurat who lives in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

“I won by canceling her front and right hand,” Lescurat said, who out-punched Sandstrom in almost every round.

Lescurat, 35, started late in pro boxing in 2021, but does have amateur experience that began 10 years ago.

Brazil’s Beatriz Ferreira Wins Title

A battle between Brazil’s Beatriz Ferreira and Argentina’s Yanina Lescano took place in Liverpool, England of all places.

Ferreira (5-0) defeated Yanina Lescano (14-4) by technical decision after six rounds on Saturday April 27. The vacant IBF lightweight title now belongs to Ferreira who bludgeoned Lescano until the fight was stopped due to a cut over the left brow of Lecano caused by an accidental clash of heads.

The Brazilian fighter now wants to fight in the Olympics.

Why?

Let the Olympics be the domain of the amateur boxers who sweat and toil for no money. Any pros taking those slots are selfish. It’s the main opportunity for amateurs to gain fame and some pros are taking away those opportunities..

“Bang Bang” Lulu Hawton Returns

Former interim atomweight champion Louisa Hawton returned to the ring after five years and defeated Thailand’s Arisara Wisetwongsa by knockout in the first round this past weekend in Bangkok.

Hawton (11-2, 6 Kos) said she hungers for a match against undisputed minimumweight champion Seniesa Estrada or Yokasta Valle.

“They know me,” said Hawton. “Id’ like that big fight.”
