Yokasta Valle Defeats Elizabeth Lopez for WBC World Title

Yokasta Wins Back Minimumweight Title and More News

It took less than a year for Yokasta Valle to grab another world title in the minimumweight category.

Valle (32-3, 10 Kos) defeated Mexico’s Elizabeth Lopez Corzo (11-7-5) by unanimous decision after 10 rounds for the WBC world title in Liberia, Costa Rica. It’s one of the titles left behind by the sudden retirement of undisputed champion Seniesa Estrada and one she never held before.

The speedy Valle fought three times this year beginning with the long-sought clash against Southern California fighter Estrada last March in Glendale, Arizona. Their encounter was one of the top fights in women’s boxing.

After 10 rounds all three judges scored it exactly the same 97-93 for Estrada.

Every round was fierce and contentious as both unleashed their speedy blows and defensive tactics with the crowd roaring its approval. It was boxing at its best as Estrada’s win gave her undisputed world championship status in the minimumweight division.

Valle sought an immediate rematch and waited for a response from Estrada’s team. Just last week it was revealed by Estrada that she was injured physically and mentally and decided to retire. The boxing world was shocked at the suddenness.

“I’m surprised with Seniesa Estrada’s decision to retire, only thing I wish for her is this new chapter in her life. We all have moments when we need to make important decisions for our well-being,” stated Valle on social media. “When she is ready to come back, I’ll gladly give her an opportunity for that rematch. Until then, I’ll stay focused on my goals and on winning more world titles.”

Not wanting to waste time, Valle and her team switched gears and opted to fight for the vacant WBC minimumweight title and soundly defeated Lopez. During the fight Valle knocked down Lopez and ended up with a major victory.

Also, light sister Naomy Valle (13-0) defeated Norma Vazquez (4-17) after four rounds in a light flyweight match. She had just participated in a Dancing With the Stars show in Costa Rica. It’s the same show that launched big sister Yokasta Valle’s popularity.

Golden Boy Promotions recently re-signed Valle to an extension. They now have two female world champions in Valle and Gabriel Fundora.

Fundora Undisputed Flyweight Champ

A battle between flyweight world titlists saw Gabriel Fundora use her height, reach and power to offset the quickness and relentless attacks of Argentina’s Gabriela “La Chucky” Alaniz and win by knockout.

It was a perfect ending.

Being the youngest undisputed champion is not really an accomplishment. It’s having promotional backing and money that allows a fighter like Fundora to even be allowed to fight for all the titles. Otherwise, she would be avoided like so many fighters and promoters avoided Mexico’s Kenia Enriquez.

None of the light flyweight or flyweight champions dared fight Enriquez. No champion since 2014 has dared fight Enriquez.

Maybe Fundora will be the one?

Fundora showed poise, discipline and shocking power in flooring Alaniz twice in the same round in winning by knockout. She improves dramatically in every fight.

Against Alaniz, the taller Fundora used her long arms to ward off attack after attack from the Argentine slugger who darted in with flurries. Though a few blows landed on Fundora, she withstood the impact and returned fire. The more aggressive the fight became it became inevitable that Fundora was going to catch her darting in. She did.

Fundora has real power and stays balanced.

A match between Fundora and Kenia Enriquez would be a fight of the ages. Both have power and are aggressive. Hopefully, this fight happens.

Amanda and Katie plus Mike Tyson and Jake Paul

The top rematch of the century between Amanda Serrano and Katie Taylor takes place next week on Friday Nov. 15, at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas. It will be streamed on Netflix. Subscribers get it for no extra cost.

Speaking of cost, Taylor is reportedly receiving $6 million and Serrano more than that. Their purse is record-setting. It also demonstrates why Taylor opted to meet Serrano not Chantelle Cameron in a rematch. Why settle for pennies when you can make dollars and fight on a historic boxing card.

Mark down your calendars for a week from Friday.
