Kim Clavell and More Female Fight News and Notes

Kim Clavell Joins the Minimumweight Party and More News

By David A. Avila

Canada’s Kim Clavell seemed comfortable at the lower minimumweight division in defeating Sol Cudos for the IBF title last week. Immediately after winning she specified her interest in fighting Yokasta Valle for the WBC title she won back last year.

It all was much simpler when Seniesa Estrada grabbed all the titles back in March 2024 in defeating Valle and held all the titles before retiring several months after. The titles were scattered in the wind and Clavell’s win over Cudos last weekend gives her one of the notches.

Clavell will have to wait to meet Valle who has a date with an American fighter Yadira Bustillos who fights out of Las Vegas, Nevada. They will be clashing on November 14 at Miami, Florida on the Jake Paul versus Gervonta “Tank” Davis card. Netflix will be streaming that.

Valle is at the top of her game right now. She defeated Evelin Bermudez who defeated Clavell two years ago.

Both Clavell and Valle rely on speedy combinations. Costa Rica’s Valle is taller and slightly younger, but both are not shy about fighting the best. Right now, they are the best in the minimumweight division.

In Los Angeles there is another minimumweight making a lot of noise in Lupita Medina an undefeated fighter trained by Manny Robles. She is promoted by Tom Loeffler’s 360 Boxing Promotions that also has WBO super flyweight world titlist Mizuki Hiruta.

Japan also has other minimumweight fighters like Yuko Kuroki who is scheduled to meet Sarah Bormann in Germany on Oct. 18, for the WBO minimumweight title. Both are accustomed to facing top competition.

The minimumweight division is a pretty lively weight class.

Norway’s Braekhus Title Bid

Former undisputed welterweight champion Cecilia Braekhus (38-2-1, 9 Kos) is meeting Ema Kozin (24-1-1, 12 Kos) for the WBC and WBO super welterweight titles on Saturday Oct. 4, in Lillestrom, Norway.

Braekhus, 44, last fought Maricela Cornejo last year in Las Vegas in a very entertaining match. Braekhus emerged the victor by unanimous decision. This is her second attempt at a super welterweight title. Previously she fought to a draw versus Terry Harper who held the WBO version at the time.

Layla McCarter Fight Postponed

Legendary fighter Layla McCarter was scheduled to fight last Saturday in Mexico but her opponent Liliana Palmera of Colombia was unable to obtain a visa in time for their match. The fight was moved to a later date.

McCarter still desires to fight one of the champions. Maybe a fight with the winner between Braekhus and Kozin can be made?

Iyana “Right Hook Roxy” Verduzco (5-0) fights Perla Lomeli (7-5) in a six round affair on Friday Oct. 3, at Chumash Casino in Santa Ynez, Calif. UFC Fight Pass will stream the 360 Promotions card.

Verduzco was a multi-USA national champion as an amateur and has a big following. She recently signed a promotional agreement with Tom Loeffler’s 360 Boxing Promotions.
