Mexicans Lulu Juarez and Yesica Nery Plata Battle for WBC Light Fly Title in Texas and More News
By David A. Avila
Two of Mexico’s best female fighters tangle in Texas of all places to decide the WBC light flyweight world champion this weekend.
Both are veterans.
Loudes “Little Lulu” Juarez (38-4, 5 Kos) the WBC light flyweight titlist meets Yesica Nery Plata (30-2, 3 Kos) the former WBC and WBA light flyweight titlist on Saturday Oct. 18, at San Padre Island in Texas. DAZN will stream the Most Valuable Promotions card.
Juarez, the younger sister of Mariana “Barbie” Juarez, has built her own career mostly fighting in Mexico. She held the super fly title from December 2020 to October 2022 that includes three defenses. She lost back-to-back riveting matches against Asley Gonzalez in that fighter’s hometown.
Now 38, Little Lulu decided to drop down two weight divisions and claimed the vacant WBC light fly title over former titlist Yesenia Gomez after Yesica Nery Plata vacated it for medical reasons. This past March she stopped Mirna Sanchez in her first defense of the title. And here she is facing the former champion who vacated both the WBA and WBC titles.
Nery Plata, 31, like Lulu, hails from the Mexico City region. She defeated Kim Clavel for the WBC light fly title and Yesica Bopp for the WBA version. She hasn’t lost a fight since November 2017 when Mexico’s dangerous Kenia Enriquez handed her a defeat.
Nery Plata allegedly was diagnosed pregnant so she vacated the titles. Then she was not pregnant and here she is looking to reclaim the WBC version. She is a hard-fighting pressure fighter who usually out-punches the opposition with a fierce style that surprises almost everyone.
Juarez has a different box and move method that takes advantage of most pressure fighters. She grew up watching her older sister and sparred her many times and found a method to neutralize it. Will it work against Nery Plata?
Three other female bouts are taking place on the MVP card.
Another world title fight features Australia’s Desley Robinson (10-3, 3 Kos) defending the IBF and WBO middleweight titles against American Logan Holler (11-3-1, 4 Kos) a tough middleweight from South Carolina.
Also attached are two other interesting battles.
Former bantam champ Shurretta Metcalf has a difficult match with Puerto Rico’s Krystal Rosario-Ortiz who was handpicked by Amanda Serrano as a future champion. Can Metcalf utilize her long reach and boxing know-how to attain victory against the talented Rosario-Ortiz. They have eight rounds to convince the judges.
Another female clash pits Mexico’s Yolanda Vega who lost to Holly Holm but just lacks experience. She will be facing Texan Miranda Reyes, 24, who suffered back-to-back losses against now world champions Stephanie Han and Caroline DuBois. This lightweight match could be an interesting scenario.
