Is Daniela Bermudez Argentina’s Best?

Is Daniela Bermudez Argentina’s Best and more female fight news

By David A. Avila

In places like Buenos Aires, Cordoba and Santa Fe a female prizefighting movement has taken hold in Argentina rivaling any other country in the world.

One young veteran named Daniela “La Bonita” Bermudez has recently stepped to the forefront of that country’s women’s boxing scene with an aggressive style that showcases her speed and athleticism.

Hailing from Rosario, Santa Fe, the WBO bantamweight world titlist Bermudez (25-3-3, 7 KOs) defended her title against Mexican southpaw Irma Garcia (19-4-1, 3 KOs) and handily beat the police officer in Buenos Aires on Saturday.

It was Bermudez’s second successful defense of the bantamweight title. Just recently she surprisingly defeated legendary Marcela Acuna in a fight for the super bantamweight title. Despite the rather easy win, Bermudez dropped back down to the 118-pound bantam division.

Bermudez, 29, also held the super flyweight title and once vied for the flyweight title against another Argentine legend Yesica “Tuti” Bopp but was defeated by the impish blonde speedster back in 2011. Rumor has it she wouldn’t mind fighting Bopp again but at a higher weight class.

Bopp, 34, is perhaps the most recognized female boxer in South America and especially in Argentina. Her only defeat took place when she ventured to Mexico to fight world champion Jessica Chavez in 2013. Chavez had flown to Argentina in 2009 and took a loss there.

Bermudez may be ready to take over the reign as queen of South America that Bopp now owns. Beating legends seems to be her niche. In 2016 she flew to Mexican legend Mariana “Barby” Juarez’s hometown and defeated her in Mexico City in a bantamweight fight. A rematch with Juarez might be quite a contest if both can agree on terms. When they first fought, Juarez had been fighting at a lower weight level. But now she has the WBC bantamweight title for two years. A rematch between Bermudez and Juarez would a combustible meeting between the two bantamweight queens.

And there are more Bermudez sisters coming down from Rosario, Argentina including Evelyn “La Princesita” Bermudez, 23, who recently won the IBF light flyweight world title this past December. Another Bermudez named Roxana, 23, is campaigning in the super flyweight class but has only three pro bouts so far.

A few other Argentines like Erica Farias, Carolina Duer and Debora Dionicius no longer have world titles but are still regarded highly for their experience. Farias held the lightweight and super lightweight titles in a vice-like grip until she was ambushed by Chicago’s Jessica McCaskill last year. A rematch has been rumored to be very possible.

With Farias possibly returning to fight McCaskill and with her good friend Bopp mentioning her dream of fighting in the U.S.A. that serves as a reminder that most prizefighters around the world would love to fight on American shores.

Undisputed welterweight champion Cecilia Braekhus said it best that most of the world recognizes that U.S. as the center of the boxing world. It means more to fight in America and prove superiority against American fighters.

Argentina has a boatload of talented champions ready to challenge the rest of the world.

Shields and Hammer

Along with Showtime in the U.S., a European outlet Box Nation said it will be showing the middleweight clash between undefeated world champions Claressa Shields and Christina Hammer on Friday April 13. That means that those fans in the United Kingdom and Ireland will be able to view the epic clash.

Less than two weeks remain until Shields and Hammer meet to determine the best.
