Debora Anahi Lopez and Estelle Mossely Defend World Titles and More News

By David A. Avila

Two world title fights in different parts of the world take place this week with France’s Estelle Mossely defending the IBO lightweight title in the Middle East while Argentina’s Anahi Lopez defends the WBO flyweight title in South America.

Mossely (9-0) meets Argentina’s Yanina Lescano (10-1) on Friday March 18, at Dubai, United Arab Emirates. The IBO lightweight world title fight will be streamed on  www.Probellum.com at 4 p.m. GMT or 9 a.m. PT.

The French fighter was a gold medalist in the 2016 Rio Olympics and currently remains undefeated after nine pro fights. She was recently signed by Probellum and will represent them for the first time.

“She’s very talented and technically proficient,” said Richard Schaefer, the head of Probellum. “Estelle Mossley is like the female Floyd Mayweather.”

Schaefer knows a thing about Mayweather. He promoted several of his championship fights while working for Golden Boy Promotions.

“We expect big things from Estelle Mossely,” Schaefer said, adding that he foresees the French fighter eventually meeting the winner between Katie Taylor and Amanda Serrano after they fight in late April.

Probellum recently signed other female world titlists such as Denmark’s Dina Thorslund and Costa Rica’s Hanna Gabriels.

“We truly believe in the future of women’s boxing,” Schaefer said.

Anahi Lopez

In Argentina, on Saturday March 19, the WBO flyweight titlist Debora Anahi Lopez (20-0-1) makes her second defense of the title when she meets Tamara Demarco (9-4) in a 10 round fight at Luis Guillon.

Though Lopez won the title in December 2019, she only had one defense of the title due to the pandemic. She has stayed busy by engaging in three non-title defenses and winning them all.

Lopez, 27, has one of the flyweight titles and could be involved in the winner between Japan’s Naoko Fujioka and America’s Marlen Esparza who meet early in April. She’s in a good position. All she has to do is win.

Congo

An all-female fight card takes place on Saturday March 19, in Kinshasa. Lately, African nations have been staging female fights on a regular basis. It’s just a matter of time before another world champion emerging from this continent.

South Africa has produced many world titlists and has Kenya, Ghana and Nigeria. This fight card takes place in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

Amateur title fight

On Thursday March 17, amateur champions collide as Chantel Navarro and Shavana Trejo battle in a featherweight clash at the Quiet Cannon golf course in Montebello, California. 360 Promotions led by Tom Loeffler are staging the event. Loeffler, who guided Gennady Golovkin’s career and Ukraine’s Serhii Bohachuk, has a long history of promoting female fights.

In the past Loeffler has promoted Laila Ali, Christy Martin, Lucia Rijker, Seniesa Estrada and Kenia Enriquez.

Navarro and Trejo should be an entertaining fight for an amateur title.

Ramla in L.A.

United Kingdom’s Ramla Ali will be fighting Shelly Barnett on Saturday, March 19, on a Golden Boy Promotions card at the Galen Center in Los Angeles. DAZN will be streaming the card but it was not revealed if Ali and Barnett will be included on the streamed portion.

Ali has shown to be more than just a model who can fight. She is tall and athletic but will be facing a veteran in Barnett who has fought several top fighters including Marlen Esparza.

Mikaela Mayer in OC

Top Rank announced that WBO, IBF super featherweight titlist Mikaela Mayer will be defending the titles against fellow American Jennifer Han on April 9, at the OC Hangar in Costa Mesa, California. ESPN will televise.

Mayer will be joined on the Top Rank card by her friend and fellow Olympian Ginny Fuchs who is making her pro debut in a six round flyweight match. No foe has been announced.
