Amanda Serrano vs Danila Ramos and More

Amanda Serrano vs Ramos and For 12 Three-Minute Rounds and More

By David A. Avila

Boxing’s most dynamic fighter Amanda Serramo returns to defend her world championship reign and establish new dimensions for all female fighters this week.

Serrano (45-2-1, 30 Kos) defends the WBA, IBF, WBO, IBO featherweight titles against Danila Ramos (12-2, 1 KO) on Friday Oct. 27, at Caribe Royale Orlando, in Orlando, Florida. DAZN will stream the historic moment at 3 p.m. PT/6 p.m.ET.

Notice there is no WBC belt.

Not only is Serrano defending the featherweight championship, she is defending women’s rights to fight 3-minute rounds and 12 rounds instead of 10. Currently the WBC does not allow this for women. It is the only sanctioning group that supports this restriction.

“I would like for us to fight the same time limits as men do,” said Serrano.

No other champion fighter dared openly state the previous restrictions are wrong. Nobody.

Serrano gathered support from more than a dozen current and former champions such as Laila Ali and Chantelle Cameron. It was a daring and explosive result that sent shockwaves through the boxing universe.

During the International Women’s Boxing Hall of Fame held on October 7, in Las Vegas, a video of Serrano was loudly applauded by the hundreds in attendance. The fighter of Puerto Rican heritage has become the crusader for female prizefighting.

One simple gesture catapulted Serrano to the top of the fight world, not just the female fight world, but for prizefighters of all genders.

The last female title fight to compete in 12 three-minute rounds was by Layla McCarter twice in 2007 in Las Vegas. First against Donna Biggers that ended in a second round knockout on January 5, 2007. Then, against Melissa Hernandez that ended in another knockout in the eighth on February 14.

I attended both historic fights. McCarter is still active and in my estimation one of the greatest and most skillful female fighters of all time. She also supports Serrano and her efforts to allow women to dictate their own rights to have three-minute rounds and 12 round title matches.

This is Serrano’s moment and for the past several months has been actively involved in the promotion of this Most Valuable Promotions boxing card. She last fought in early August against her rival and friend Heather Hardy in 10 two-minute rounds.

Opposing Serrano in the boxing ring on Friday is Ramos a Brazilian fighter who trains in Argentina and became the number one contender by the WBO. She defeated Brenda Carabajal who fought champion Sarah Mahfoud.

The stylish southpaw slugger Serrano has fought many of the best female fighters of any period such as Katie Taylor, Daniela Bermudez, Erika Cruz and Yazmin Rivas. And if she had her wish there would have been many others who refused to face her and her deadly accurate punches. She has 30 knockouts on her resume despite fighting only two-minute rounds.

“I’m not doing this for more Kos, I have 30 knockouts with two minutes, but it would have absolutely made a difference in some of my fights including my fight with Katie Taylor,” said Serrano who fought Taylor in the benchmark for women on April 30, 2022.

On Friday, Serrano returns to the boxing ring once more to blaze more history in the sport.

“I love being a trend-setter,” said Serrano. “I like doing, not talking.”

Mexico’s Final Golden Era Champ

This past weekend Arely Mucino lost the IBF flyweight title by knockout to Gabriela Fundora in Inglewood, Calif. She was the last of a “Golden Era” generation of female fighters that held Mexico spellbound with riveting performances during the early 2000s.

That period of time was unique. Only Germany and Mexico were open to women’s boxing and fighters like Regina Halmich and Daisy Lang drew large audiences and performed on pay-per-view television cards in Europe. And women like Mariana “Barbie” Juarez, Jackie Nava and Ana Maria Torres captured Mexican audiences on television in their country.

Mucino was part of this contingent of Mexican fighters that headlined boxing cards and television spots. She won flyweight titles from every sanctioning organization during her career.

All these female fighters proved that they could headline boxing cards and could attract large audiences. They paved the way for today’s generation that are also attracting millions to watch major cards In Europe and America.

Arely Mucino, 34, was the last of that Golden Era of Mexican world champions.

The new flyweight champion Fundora is 21 years old and stands 5’9” and weighed 110 pounds for the fight. She represents a new era of polished boxers with a lengthy career ahead of her.
