A battle in San Bernardino takes place this weekend.
WBC super flyweight titlist Adelaida “La Cobra” Ruiz (18-1-1, 8 Kos) defends against interim champion Ginny Fuchs (4-0, 1 KO) on Saturday July 18, at the Orange Show Events Center in San Bernardino. ProBox.TV event can be seen on YouTube.com
Not since the Gunfight at the O.K. Corral has a battle like this taken place between two women from the West. Ruiz is from Los Angeles, California and Fuchs is from Houston, Texas.
Ironically, one of the participants of the OK Corral battle was formerly a Marshal at nearby Colton a mile away from the boxing venue. Virgil Earp, of the famous Earp brothers along with Doc Holliday shot it out with the Cowboys in Tombstone, Arizona back in 1881.
The Earp family established a home in Colton where the parents lived for many years and were joined occasionally by the other Earps.
Back in the 1880s both San Bernardino and Colton were at odds due to rival railroad companies. The Southern Pacific Railroad was at odds with Santa Fe Railway which turned into gun battles called the “Battle of the Crossings.”
In a way, this area has always been a center for battle and now we have Fuchs and Ruiz poised to trade blows once again. Their first encounter took place at an outdoor venue Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson, Calif. two years ago. The sun was blinding and hot that day.
“The sun was bugging my eyes so bad. I kept trying to fight outside of the sun,” said Ruiz of the first fight with Fuchs. “So, I was focusing on the sun and Ginny was beating me to the spot.”
Their battle was intense and fierce. Both fighters did not hold back from throwing punches for 10 rounds. The match was close and ended in a split decision win for Fuchs. It was also a top consideration for Female Fight of the Year. Their fight lost that distinction to the Katie Taylor and Amanda Serrano’s rematch.
But it was an eye-popping contest. Both felt they could do more.
“I need to pressure her more and make her go backwards,” said Fuchs.
“I need to not concentrate on power,” said Ruiz. “I need to be more focused mentally.”
Fuchs, 38, is a former track runner for LSU who transitioned into boxing and became an Olympic representative for USA Boxing.
“I never fought anyone with her kind of amateur experience, international experience. I fought girls with pro experience,” said Ruiz. “She has over 50 fights and moves well. I learned a lot from that fight.”
Ruiz, 37, was an amateur standout too but forced to stop due to pregnancy. Four children later, she returned to the sport she loves at age 28. She has a pressure style that allowed her to remain undefeated until she met Fuchs two years ago.
“She doesn’t have footwork,” said Fuchs. “But I have to push her back.”
Fuchs seeks to establish herself as a world champion and hopefully become financially stable.
“Financially it’s been a struggle,” said Fuchs who recently signed a promotional deal with Red Owl Boxing. “I have clients, sponsors, and family have helped me. But it’s a struggle.”
The same for Ruiz who has four children age 12 and up.
Ruiz works at a medical office and at Amazon. She had a third job, but it took too much time away from her training.
Both fighters know all about reaching the pinnacle the hard way. Nothing was given to either Fuchs or Ruiz and now its come down to another gunfight between two contrasting styles.
Will the move and groove Fuchs emerge on top again or will the pillage and burn style of Ruiz find success?
Saturday is the birthday of Virgil Earp who died in 1905. The home his parents lived in still exists in nearby Colton. Would any of the Earps attend the Ruiz and Fuchs world title fight?
Wyatt Earp did referee the Bob Fitzsimmons and Tom Sharkey fight in 1896. So, I would say the answer is yes.
