Another chapter in women’s boxing is emerging.
For the first time that I can remember four eye-popping events are about to take place in the month of August. Five top pound-for-pound female fighters are headlining boxing cards in different parts of the world.
It’s a great moment for female prizefighting. Mark down all these dates and cancel all your other plans if you fancy women’s boxing.
First, Denmark’s sensational Dina Thorslund (24-0) meets Australia’s Cherneka Johnson (19-2) for the undisputed bantamweight world championship on Saturday Aug. 8, at Caribe Royale Orlando at Orlando, Florida. ESPN will televise the Most Valuable Promotions event.
Thorslund was out of action due to pregnancy and meanwhile Johnson was racking up wins and belts. They are finally going to meet in the boxing ring to decide the true queen of the bantamweights.
“I truly believe everything happens for a reason, and for this fight to come together the way it has makes it even more exciting! Now is my time to show what I am truly capable of,” said Johnson. “I plan to do exactly that – take my belts home, take her pound-for-pound ranking, and claim the bantamweight queen title.”
Thorlund itches for this opportunity to regain the world title.
“Cherneka Johnson needs to be at her absolute best against me, because I’m returning with a level of motivation I’ve never had before. And let’s not forget one important thing – I’m the only undefeated fighter between the two of us, and I still will be after this fight.”
Claressa in Atlanta
The number one pound for pound fighter in the world, Claressa Shields, returns after signing an $8 million dollar contract deal with Salita Promotions and Wynn Records. She is risking her status as the top female fighter by agreeing to drop down to middleweight after several years at super middleweight and heavyweight.
It’s risky business to suddenly shed 14 pounds from 174 to 160. It’s dangerous.
Shields (18-0), the speedy Michigan native and two-time Olympic gold medalist, continues to dominate multiple weight classes and now faces WBC middleweight champion Kaye Scott (4-1-1) on Saturday Aug. 15, at State Farm Arena in Atlanta, Georgia. DAZN will stream the Salita Promotions and Wynn Records event.
“At this point in my career, every fight is about legacy,” said former middleweight world champion Shields. “Kaye Scott is a champion, and I respect what she’s accomplished. But becoming undisputed at 160 pounds again starts with beating the best. That’s always been my mindset. I don’t chase easy fights, I choose meaningful ones.”
Serrano’s California Debut
Seven-division world champion Amanda Serrano makes her California debut in search of establishing a new knockout record for female fighters when she fights Argentina’s Lucrecia Manzur.
Puerto Rico’s Serrano (49-4-1, 32 KOs) fights Manzur (14-4) on Friday Aug. 21 at Pechanga Casino and Resort in Temecula, Calif. TikTok Live will stream the Most Valuable Promotions event.
“I’ve dedicated my career to creating opportunities for women’s boxing and bringing our sport to the biggest stages possible, so to headline the first-ever championship boxing event on TikTok is incredibly meaningful,” said Serrano who has never boxed in California. She did participate in an MMA event in Los Angeles in 2017.
Manzur is excited about fighting Serrano.
“I have tremendous respect for everything Amanda has accomplished and for the legacy she has built. But once we step into the ring, my focus is on winning,” said Manzur.
USA vs UK
Two pound for pound fighters finally meet when Mikaela Mayer (22-2) suits up against England’s Chantelle Cameron (22-1) for the WBC and WBO super welterweight titles on Saturday Aug. 29 in Birmingham, England. ESPN, DAZN and Sky will televise the Matchroom and Most Valuable Promotions card.
“We know how great of a fight this is because we made it,” said Mayer who resides in Las Vegas, Nevada. “I’m predicting female fight of the year 100%. I don’t see anyone else who can top this.”
Cameron expects incomparable fireworks
“I think me and Mikaela [Mayer] are quite similar. We want to fight the best, and that’s why I’ve got a lot of respect for her because she’s not shy to back down from a challenge. I want to fight the very best, and Mikaela is on that list as well,” said Cameron.
Mayer and Cameron are not alone on that fight card. Also participating are Caroline DuBois (13-0-1) vs Amelia Moore (4-0) in a lightweight championship fight and Skye Nicolson (16-1) vs Miyo Yoshida (19-5) in a super bantamweight clash.

Colombia
On Friday July 31, super featherweights Yolis Franco (35-14-5) and Maria Miranda (17-24) meet six rounds at Bolivar.
Czech Republic
Magdalena Szwed (8-0) knocked out Vera Horvathova (0-1) in the first round on Saturday July 25. The flyweight fight took place in Usti nad Labern.
France
On Saturday Aug. 1, light flyweights Tania D’Almeida (5-0) and Nadia Pastrana (2-0) meet six rounds at Deauville.

On Saturday Aug. 1, super lightweights Valgerdur Gudsteinsdottir (7-8) and Tina Bluhm (0-1) meet four rounds at Euskirchen.
