Egypt is Calling: Mizuki Hiruta vs Mai Soliman and More News
Just recently, a few months ago, Japan’s Mizuki “Mimi” Hiruta was crowned Ring Magazine’s Female Fighter of the Year.
“It was amazing,” said Hiruta. “I’m so happy.”
Hiruta had an amazing 2025 as she fought four times and was successful in retaining the WBO super flyweight world title in each contest. She was the only female champion to accomplish the feat last year.
She was named our Female Fighter of the Year at the Prizefighters.com and Ring Magazine also selected her the Female Fighter of the Year.
“I didn’t believe it. It was like a dream,” Hiruta told Xicana Boxing.
Undefeated Hiruta (10-0, 2 KOs) is ready to defend the WBO super fly title against native Egypt’s Mai Soliman (10-1, 6 KOs) on Saturday May 23, at the Pyramids of Giza, Egypt. DAZN pay-per-view will stream the Goldstar and Matchroom Boxing card.
If you ever meet Hiruta, she resonates like a 1000-watt light bulb that is blinding and comforting at the same time. She is always smiling and constantly aware of others around her.
What Hiruta accomplished is quite amazing when considering that she made all her title defenses in the USA although she is a native of Japan. Female boxing in that country is growing, but the pay is very low. HIruta followed the footsteps of Japan’s great Naoko Fujioka and arrived in California several years ago. She hit the ground running and was quickly signed by 360 Boxing Promotions run by Tom Loeffler.
If you know anything about Loeffler, he can spot talent; and he is especially effective in spotting female boxing talent. Two years ago, he signed Hiruta and gave her the spotlight to perform.
Hiruta even traveled to Mexico and was an immediate hit. Mexicans loved her passion and willingness to scoop up the local culture and cuisine. She loves Mexican food and has learned Mexican phrases.
But the Japanese fighter with pink or blonde dyed hair is more than just a glowing happy boxer, she is a former gymnast and usually celebrates a win by doing a tumbling front somersault routine. She is an exceptional athlete.
When Hiruta first arrived, she had the usual volume punching style preferred by Japanese female fighters. But since training under Manny Robles, she has honed her style into a more boxer-puncher mode, effective on the outside or inside. Agility is one of her strongpoints and speed is another. She is always ready to unleash that Japanese spirit of total warfare.
Soliman, 28, though a native of Egypt, lives and trains in Australia. She has four consecutive knockout wins. All of her fights took place in Australia.
“I’ve watched Mizuki for awhile. She has defended the title five or six times,” Soliman said. “I’m just glad this fight happened.”
Hiruta, who is learning English and Spanish, said she is aware of Soliman’s power and talent and that it makes her a little nervous but her favorite Spanish response is “no pasa nada” and “vamos.” Translation: “No problem. Let’s go.”
This will be Hiruta’s sixth title defense.
Rhonda and Gina
It was an event that only Jake Paul seems to have the vision and ability to pull off and, once again, the public responded with substantial viewership, according to Yahoo! Sports.
Based on an unsubstantiated claim, the Netflix show by Most Valuable Promotions did more than 12 million views.
The Rhonda Rousey versus Gina Carano fight between the two female MMA icons on Saturday from Inglewood was the number one viewed show in the U.S. Canada, and Mexico. And it easily out-drew UFC 328.
But many complained of the quick 17-second ending as Rousey quickly took down Carano and manipulated an armbar that forced the Mandalorian star to submit.
Social media platforms were littered with complaints about the quick ending.
Nobody should have been surprised.
Rousey, an Olympic bronze medalist in judo, made a career of quick endings via armbar. Once again, she quickly took over the situation and applied her craft.
Carano, 44, had to lose 100 pounds to prepare for this fight. At her age, losing that much weight and the simple ageing process was sure to slow down her reflexes. As a fighter known for kick boxing, quickness was a necessary ingredient to offset Rousey’s take down skills. Carano did not have quickness. She attempted a kick and Rousey took advantage in an instant.
I had predicted to a friend that Rousey would win by armbar very quickly. It happened exactly as I envisioned.
But many who do not know the sport, or Rousey and Carano, expected a long drawn-out fight. Sorry, that was never in the cards.
