Kayla Gomez, MVP04 and More Female Boxing News and Notes
By David A. Avila
If the name Kayla Gomez sounds familiar you are not alone in thinking that.
Her name has been whispered in the amateur boxing circles for a decade as she gathered trophies, plaques and US National championships throughout the years.
Gomez, 22, is one of the young women from El Paso, Texas that have broken through the cloud of anonymity with spectacular wins in amateur contests that make other regions and countries take notice during boxing tournaments.
On Friday June 19, Gomez (0-0) debuts as a professional against fellow debutant Shayntain Creer (0-0) at Thunder Studios in Long Beach, Calif. DAZN will stream the MF Promotions fight card.
Creer, 39, is a former MMA fighter with six pro bouts who fights out of Georgia.
Because Gomez is not your average amateur boxer turning pro, this match will be set at six rounds. Gomez has won national and international tournaments including the PanAm games.
“I’m so excited for this fight,” said Gomez whose nickname is “the Truth.”
The El Paso, Texan is familiar with Southern California. She has sparred with many pro boxers from the region including Seniesa Estrada the now retired undisputed minimumweight champion.
“She has a high IQ,” said Joe Estrada, father of Seniesa Estrada. “She doesn’t just throw punches she thinks and makes adjustments.”
Gomez, like many other young boxers coming up during the past 10 years, is a product of a boxing family. She grew up in a boxing world and is a second-generation boxer following in her mother’s footsteps. Her mother Crystal Aceves, in fact, is her trainer and coach.
Boxing professionally has always been a goal for Gomez. Even while participating in amateur tournaments she was told she had “a pro style” of boxing. Many amateur fighters find it difficult to make the transition to the pro style. They claim it’s no different but lack the tools to adapt to the pro game.
Amateur boxing is about scoring points with speed and precision. Pro boxing is more about hurting the opposition with power and accuracy. As an amateur Gomez racked up numerous wins by knockout. It’s a sense of pride with the El Paso fighter.
Now she ventures into the pro world for the first time.
“This is going to be exciting,” Gomez said. “I can’t wait to make my debut.”
Title Changes
A couple of world titles switched hands last weekend.
First, Argentina’s Evelin Bermudez (22-2-1) traveled to American shores and once again suffered a loss. This time Mexico’s Estefany Alegria (15-1) out-fought the taller Bermudez to win by unanimous decision after 10 rounds. The WBO and IBF light flyweight titles switch hands.
Alegria, 26, hails from Guadalajara and won the Performance of the Night by promoters MVP.
Another title that changed hands saw Panama’s Nataly Delgado (21-7-2) out-fight Jasmine Artiga (15-1-1) who was making her third defense. After 10 rounds all three judges scored it the same in favor of Delgado 97-93.
Delgado, 31, was making her first appearance in the USA and made the most of it. She now holds the IBF super flyweight title.
The super lightweights are a very stacked division and led by Japan’s Mizuki Hiruta who holds the WBO version and was voted Female Fighter of the Year by this publication and Ring Magazine. Others holding titles are Mexico’s Irma Garcia who was seen knocking out England’s Emma Dolan this past April. And the fourth is WBC titlist Adelaida Ruiz of Los Angeles whose first title defense is set for a rematch with Ginny Fuchs in San Bernardino on July 18.
Katie Taylor’s Final Bow
Ireland’s Katie Taylor (25-1, 6 Kos) announced her final fight will take place in Dublin where she will fight France’s Flora Pili (12-0, 2 Kos) on Sept. 5, at Croke Park in Dublin, Ireland. DAZN will stream the Matchroom Boxing card.
Taylor was the goal of many of the top female fighters. Her greatest foe was Puerto Rico’s Amanda Serrano whom together established records and set records that may never be equaled or broken. They first fought each other on April 30, 2022 and became the first female fighters to headline and sell-out a boxing card at Madison Square Garden in New York City. In their second fight more than 70 million viewers watched them collide on Netflix on November 15, 2024. They also fought a third time on July 11, 2025. Taylor won all three contests. Those fights set the bar for future women’s contests.
Taylor turns 40 on July 7.
Amanda Serrano Makes Times List
Time Magazine announced that seven-division champion Amanda Serrano is one of the top influential sports figures in the world and made its inaugural TIME 100 Sports List for 2026.
“Being named to TIME’s inaugural TIME100 Sports list is an incredible honor. Throughout my career, I’ve always wanted to prove that women’s boxing belongs on the biggest stages in sports and that female fighters deserve the same opportunities, visibility, and respect as the men,” said Amanda Serrano. “This recognition is for every woman and young girl who has fought so far to move this sport forward, for all the women who have been able to get the platforms and paydays they deserve. Thank you to Nakisa Bidarian, Jake Paul, MVP, my team, and my fans in Puerto Rico and around the world for their support to both make the impact we have so far, and for the work ahead to continue creating opportunities for the next generation of women’s boxing.”
