Alycia Baumgardner, the undisputed super featherweight champ, finally gets an opportunity to avenge the only blemish of her professional career.

Here comes Christina Linardatou.

Baumgardner (14-1, 7 Kos) looks to avenge the only pro defeat that was given to her by Linardatou (14-2, 6 Kos) on Saturday July 15, at the Masonic Temple in Detroit, Michigan. DAZN will stream the Matchroom Boxing Card.

“This fight is going to show the world everything,” said Baumgardner to DAZN. “I could have chose anyone for my homecoming fight but I chose (Linardatou).”

It was five years ago that Baumgardner met Linardatou in Louisville, Kentucky and was simply out-worked by the Dominican fighter with a whirlwind style. The “Bomb’s” counter-punching style did not work effectively against the nonstop punching she endured that night in July 2018.

Baumgardner’s set ups, for her counter right bombs, opened up avenues for Mikaela Mayer to attack when they fought. But Baumgardner then showed the ability to adapt and change tactics with other weapons and won a close split decision over her American rival to win undisputed status.

Will her tactics work again or will she adapt a new strategy?

Linardatou has not fought the same competition as Baumgardner, who blew out Terri Harper the current super welterweight titlist and former super featherweight titlist. But she did face the best in Katie Taylor and did pretty well back in 2019. But that was four years ago.

Does she still have fuel in the tank?

Baumgardner has blossomed in the women’s boxing world. And if successful on Saturday night in Detroit, there are many top tier fighters to choose as a next target like Katie Taylor, Amanda Serrano, Chantelle Cameron and Mikaela Mayer again.

Saturday’s match remains critical for the undisputed super featherweight world champion.

“I’ve worked a long time to get here, to be undisputed,” Baumgardner said. “I’m going to punish her.”

Marlen Esparza unifies

For the third consecutive fight Marlen Esparza was in a very tough battle but the scores did not reflect the actual combat.

What’s going on with Texas judges?

When she fought Japan’s five-division world champ Naoko Fujioka in a brutal back and forth battle a year ago, two Texas judges gave Esparza every round. Only Nevada judge Lisa Giampa had an acceptable score of 97-93 for Esparza.

Against Gabriela Alaniz last Saturday in San Antonio, one Texas judge Javier Alvarez scored 99-91 for Esparza. Lisa Giampa the Nevada judge scored an acceptable 95-95 draw. It was that close of a fight.

Maybe Golden Boy Promotions that promotes Esparza should refrain from using any Texas judges in Esparza’s fights. Perhaps use neutral judges from other countries and Giampa from Nevada. She’s consistent.

Not blaming Esparza, her job is to simply battle and entertain. She has improved in almost every facet of learning the pro style. The only thing missing is power and that’s something not in her arsenal. But she can take a punch.
