Amanda Serrano is Changing the Game

The Quest of Amanda Serrano and More News and Notes

By David A. Avila

Every generation or so, a prizefighter like Puerto Rico’s Amanda Serrano arrives and slowly changes the landscape of the boxing business.

No one does it alone, but Serrano has been the straw that stirs the drink for both women and men’s prizefighting.

Think about it.

Next month, Serrano (45-2-1, 30 Kos) will meet Brazil’s Danila Ramos (12-2) in a featherweight contest set for 12 three-minute rounds at the Caribe Royale Orlando in Orlando, Florida. DAZN will stream the three-minute round title fight that takes place on October 27.

She’s not asking for permission to fight three-minute rounds.

“I’m hoping to show that women can fight any time we are given,” said Serrano adding that whether its two minutes or three minutes. “Not sure who said we are the weaker sex so let’s make them fight less time.”

Don’t bet against Serrano making three-minute rounds a fixture in female boxing.

Serrano has already set the bar high for others following her trail. Just in the past several years she achieved the first million-dollar purse, won seven division world titles and sold-out Madison Square Garden. Now she’s showing women can demand, not ask, for three-minute rounds.

While other female fighters cower under two-minute round restrictions imposed on them by promoters, television executives or sanctioning organizations, Serrano has wagged her finger at those restrictions and declared them unreasonable.

It won’t be the first time a female prizefighter has demanded a three-minute round fight or 12 rounds. Others like Layla McCarter did it twice before and Seniesa Estrada fought Marlen Esparza in a three-minute round fight several years ago in Las Vegas. I attended all three of those world title contests.

Now, 34, after a long journey of fighting and meeting the best in the world, Serrano is now a manager in her own right and staging herself against Ramos in the main event next October.

“I love being a trend-setter,” Serrano said.

Women’s Hall of Fame

Next week the International Women’s Boxing Hall of Fame host its annual induction ceremony at the Orleans Casino Hotel in Las Vegas, Nevada on Oct. 6 and 7.

Over the years the pandemic stalled the ceremony from taking place and it lost a little momentum, but every year it remains the greatest event geared toward women’s professional boxing.

Sue Fox, the owner and publisher of Women’s Boxing Archive Network or WBAN, initiated the hall of fame for female boxing in 2014. Among those expected to attend include Germany’s Regina Halmich, United Kingdom’s Jamie Johnson, and America’s Layla McCarter and Chevelle Hallback.

Many others such as Christy Martin, Lisa Holewyne, Carlos Palomino and Martha Salazar are also expected to attend.

Festivities begin on Friday October 6 at 1 p.m. at the Orleans second floor. On Saturday, the event begins at 5 p.m. Tickets are still available and priced at $85.
