World Title Fights in U.S. and Germany

Shadasia, Franchon, Boorman and Nery Plata and More News

By David A. Avila

Two potentially explosive world title fights take place this weekend.

First, a showdown between former champion Franchon Crews-Dezurn and Shadasia Green ends the year for big-time women world title fights this year.

Crews-Dezurn (8-2) meets undefeated Green (13-0) on Friday Dec. 15, at Caribe Royale Orlando in Orlando, Florida. It’s the co-feature on the Jake Paul vs. Andre August fight. DAZN will stream the Most Valuable Promotions card.

Though she’s only been able to fight once a year Crews-Dezurn always brings plenty of heart and action into every fight. This past July she clashed with England’s Savannah Marshall where both pummeled each other.

Though Crews-Dezurn lost the undisputed super middleweight championship, Marshall could not face Green and was forced to relinquish the WBC title.

Green, 34, has been on the pro boxing scene for four years; and known for her power which was evident in her 13 professional fights.

Crews-Dezurn erupted on the pro scene in 2016 with her pro debut fight against Claressa Shields.  That was their introduction to the pro fight world and they amazed everyone in the Las Vegas arena with their ferocity.

Expect Green and Crews-Dezurn to show the same fierceness.

Light flyweights

In Germany, interim light flyweight champ Sarah Boorman (17-0) and WBC and WBA light flyweight champ Yesica Nery Plata (29-2) clash to determine the true champion at 108 pounds on Saturday Dec. 16, at Karlsruhe. DAZN will be showing the world title match.

Boorman, 33, has been in several pretty good fights recently, beating the likes of Yadira Bustillos and Ana Arrazola. The German fighter is strong and applies a straight-forward attack behind a strong jab. Nothing fancy. It’s strength against strength when Boorman fights.

Nery Plata, 29, is also a pure pressure fighter. She knows how to use her long arms and never stops punching. She won’t be running away, she will be moving forward. The Mexican fighter recently defeated Yesica “Tutti” Bopp and Kim Clavel. Both exceptional fighters.

Boorman versus Nery Plata will be like matching two armored tanks. Whoever has more staying power will win. There’s no going backwards.

Miyo and Ebanie in SF

This past weekend Miyo Yoshida gave a sample of Japanese fighting in her battle with Australia’s Ebanie Bridges for the IBF bantamweight world title in San Francisco.

Japan has long been a haven for female boxing with great champions like Naoko Fujioka and Tsunami Tenkai and current champions Yuko Kuroki, Mika Iwakawa, and Mizuki Hiruta.

Most Japanese fighters get their baptism at Korakuen Hall in Tokyo.

For decades Japan along with Mexico, Argentina, Germany and Canada kept female boxing alive until the Olympics showcased female boxing. Now women’s pro boxing is erupting everywhere.

Women’s boxing is big in San Francisco. One overlooked reason for the sell-out crowd last weekend has been the attraction of female boxing. Beautiful Brawlers led by sisters Blanca and Lupi Gutierrez have helped women’s boxing explode in the Bay Area.

Every year Beautiful Brawlers stage a tournament that draws female boxers from all over the world. It was the boost by female customers who attended the Matchroom Boxing card last weekend.

The entertainment value of female prizefighting was on display last Saturday in San Francisco as Bridges and Yoshida lit up the arena. Let’s see who was paying attention.

Czarina McCoy

A few weeks ago, Las Vegas-based fighter Czarina McCoy (16-2, 4 Kos) won a regional IBO super featherweight title by majority decision in Mexico.

McCoy actually participated in a few of the Beautiful Brawlers tournaments in San Francisco and said it was one of her favorite destinations as an amateur. Now she’s a pro living in Las Vegas, Nevada.

If you don’t recognize the name or don’t recall seeing her fight, there is a reason. Most of her pro fights have taken place in Mexico. Rarely are her fights registered on BoxRec.com punctually and rarely can fans watch her live.

The southpaw fighter known as the “Black Rose” has a total of 16 pro bouts with only one taking place in the USA. She began as a 114-pound super flyweight and now fights as a 130-pound super featherweight. She’s fought in Colima, Monterrey, and Tijuana, Mexico and has an abundance of harrowing and funny stories to tell about her journeys.

She’s only begun at 22 years. Stay tuned. Her Instagram is @Czarinamccoy2

Amazon

It was announced last week that Premier Boxing Champions signed an agreement with Amazon to stream its boxing pay-per-views and bouts beginning in 2024.

“We are thrilled to join with Premier Boxing Champions to bring the best boxers in the world to Prime Video, and to give more fans than ever the chance to experience these must-see events,” said Marie Donoghue, VP, U.S. sports content & partnerships, Amazon. “With live coverage of PBC action throughout the calendar year, Prime Video continues to bring viewers in the U.S. and around the world the best in sports.”

PBC has an enormous lineup of male fighters that include David Benavidez, Jermell Charlo and Caleb Plant to name a few of its more than 150 fighters on its roster. But the promotion company does not have any women.

It’s my theory that PBC failed to attract viewers because it does not showcase female prizefighters. All the other promotion companies have women fighters telecast. Only PBC and its affiliate TGB Promotions do not have any women fighters.

Though Showtime had a tremendous year of mega fights. It failed to attract fans to its minor cards that only featured men bouts in Minnesota and other small venues. If Showtime had been allowed by PBC to show women fights on the smaller and bigger shows, they would have survived. That’s my take.

I wonder if Ms. Donoghue notices that PBC has no female boxers.
