Japan’s Mizuki “Mimi” Hiruta Defeats Mai Soliman in Egypt
Japan’s Mizuki Hiruta (11-0, 2 KOs) showed the rest of the world what only California and Japan have witnessed a total fighter with speed, agility and staying power in defeating Australia’s Mai Soliman (10-2, 6 KOs) by unanimous decision at Giza, Egypt on Saturday.
The champion retained the WBO and Ring super flyweight titles.
“I made it. I’m so happy,” said Hiruta. “This is amazing. Like a dream.”
Known as “Mimi”, Hiruta used angles and speed to keep Soliman off balance and unable to unload her powerful right hand that had felled six previous opponents. But the nifty Hiruta was seldom in the same position for more than a few seconds.
Soliman did connect but seldom was able to land combinations. But she did land occasional rights and when they connected Hiruta got out of range or clinched. The native Egyptian fighter just couldn’t land more than one punch at a time.
The Egyptian fighter’s best rounds took place in the seventh and eighth round when she connected solidly with rights. But they were not enough to stop Hiruta from out-punching her.
“Her punches are very strong and she is very beautiful,” Mimi said of Soliman.
Meanwhile, Hiruta was countering with her fluid jabs and right hooks. And when the openings present itself in came the straight lefts. Hiruta finally was able to show the world stage what her fighting skills are all about.
For the past 17 months, only fans in Southern California and Japan were able to see the flamboyant boxer display her footwork and fighting style that enabled her to win and defend the WBO title seven times. The win over Soliman was her first defense of the Ring Magazine title.
After 10 rounds all three judges saw Hiruta the winner by unanimous decision 99-91, 98-92 (2x)
“I want to be a super star. I will keep these belts forever,” Mimi shouted. “I owe everything to my team.”
